My computer finally quit indexing after 67 hours, only to start up again after I started L4(like other Mac owners). My question is, should I let it keep indexing or am I just wasting my time at this point? (I am running A4)
You are LUCKY! I can't even get my Logos 4 to start downloading online! Have been waiting FOUR DAYS for response to a simple email question from "support" so I rang today from Australia ten minutes to 9pm US time and was told the "support" department had closed already. If I could just get my money back I'd be happy.
As this is Alpha software (and Alpha software is rarely released for the public to view as it develops), you sadly are wasting your time if you expect to do any substantial work with it. There is a well known bug/problem with indexing on the Mac platform, so whether you continue to let it run or not is down to your patience. My install of Alpha 4 kept reindexing over and over every time I opened it and was never fully indexed. The indexer would just crash.
Until this software hits at least the Beta stage or maybe even the RC stage, my suggestion is to use the old Logos 1.2.2 engine or run Logos 4 on a virtual machine like Fusion or Parallels. I am using L4 Windows every day on Fusion and it is a great piece of software. If the final release of the Mac version is as good, we are all in for a real treat. In the meantime, patience is the word of the day while we wait for them to get it into that state!
Do you have any suggestions on where to download Fusion or Parallels? I have L4 on my PC, and I love it, I want to have it on my mac also. I am a new mac user so I know nothing about using Fusion or Parallels. Is it complicated?
Face the fact, the indexing is really a time wasting but the reward is good.
I know that many are not really into the alpha testing but rather install it to see the workability of the software. To complain about it would never help the development process.
I would suggest if you have the ample of time, you can help out the development of the L4mac. Log those problems you encountered. It would greatly help the development, and please don't complain . The logos programmers are working very hard to solve every issues we encountered.
If you have no time or not into alpha testing, I would suggest not to install the software. Please wait till we have the final release of the software. Meanwhile use the windows version or the Logos 1.2.2.
Peace!
Hi Michael, you can purchase and download the Fusion at www.vmware.com and Parallels at http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop
Or you can download the Virtualbox at http://www.virtualbox.org/ for free. It works alike with the fusion and parallels.
You can find Fusion here http://www.vmware.com/products/
Hey Robin, I am not complaining I new what I was getting into sort of. No, I am asking should I still keep indexing or not. (Is it accomplishing anything)
Michael, Logos 4 works fine in a Win XP virtual machine under Parallels on my Macbook Pro. Reasonably peppy. Makes Logos4Mac look a lot worse than Alpha. As one who does some software development, I would not inflict something this incomplete and buggy on my testers.
I apologize if my content is too harsh and I don't mean that. I am just reply on the basis of your topic "Wasting my time?" Yes, indeed it is time wasting if we install not for testing. Only to bring frustration and disappointment.
Anyway, to answer your question, my experience with the indexing had took me 4 days to complete. It looks promising and is quite fast when doing a simple searching. However, the A4 is very unstable. It crashed more frequently than the previous alpha from my perspective.
I am asking should I still keep indexing or not. (Is it accomplishing anything)
That is hard to tell without reading the log (not me, but someone who knows what they are reading). I terminated indexing once and submitted a log file. Tom Philpot of Logos informed me that I stopped too soon, so I tried again. This time it finished in about 36 hours. If you have not enabled logging, see this post for instructions http://community.logos.com/forums/t/3311.aspx
