New to Logos

I want to be the best I can be as a preacher. I saw and heard about how effective Logos was, so I invested a week's pay in getting the most I could afford. I have sent an entire day trying to see what the videos promised. I have nothing to show for it. I can't get the program to do anything but say it is indexing. I called for help at a couple of hours, and they said they would call back in 45 minutes. Three hours later I called again, and was told they had gone home, and I would have to try again Monday. The web site says they are open Saturday.

I have nothing to show for my money and efforts.

Sorry to hear about your experience. The initial install and indexing of L4 does take a lot of patience. The indexing can take a number of hours to complete. But once it is finished, it enhances the program tremendously. Do not be discouraged! Here are some helpful links realated to indexing.

Logos 4 is very effective in helping pastors better prepair sermons (has been my experience as a pastor). Once you get through the initial indexing and begin to learn the ins and outs of L4 I believe you will be very pleased with your decision of investing in Logos.

You may want to start with the Logos Wiki page. It will be easier to follow as opposed to the forum pages. However, there is a TON of helpful information on the forums. You can use the search function to find discussions about particular topics.

The Mac Engine is in alpha stage right now. This basically means it lacks features and crashes a lot. From what I have heard , the windows engine is an amazing product. The Mac engine will get there, but it isn't their yet. If you have a windows computer or know how to install a virtual machine on your Mac I'd suggest doing so. That way you can use the fruits of your hard earned money.

I sure hope you are more patient with your flock than you are with your software.

The whole point of the long indexing sequence up front is to speed the searches up when you are actually using the software on a day-to-day basis. There's still no such thing as a free lunch, in spite of what Pelosi keeps telling us. The fast searches require a specialized indexing, and that's what's eating your CPU time up front.

My appologies, I obviously wasn't paying enough attention. (and it is late for me)... I just replied w/o paying attention to the fact that this is posted under "Lobos 4 mac"...

Bryan, if you are using the Mac version, please don't think that it is a good representation of what Logos is. The Mac version is in Alpha. It's not ready for real work, but rather just testing and experimenting. I'm a long term user of Logos and I can't use it for anything I am currently working on, so instead I am using Logos 4 Windows on my Mac using Fusion. L4 Win under Fusion is very, very good.

Specificially on the topic of indexing, the Mac version of indexing has not been optimised and I don't expect it to be until the software hits Beta stage. For an example, to do the initial index on Windows took me 5 1/2 hours as opposed to 14 hours on Mac.

All this said, if there is anything we can do to help you out on these forums, there are usually a few hard core forum users who are more than happy to lend a hand. From what I understand, even though Logos has extended its support hours in anticipation of the launch of Logos 4, they are swamped at the moment.

the guy bought a product that he assumed (or was led to believe) was more than what is being offered at this point. may i point out yet again that the http://MacBibleSoftware.com page still points to Logos 4, and not the Alpha disclaimer page.

Bryan - we are all hoping that the Mac version is up to par with the Windows version as soon as possible. it looks great.

I have a suggestion that LOGOS might want to consider. The LOGOS 4 MAC alpha is only for the strong of heart who are willing to devote time away form real Bible study to help improve the software. For most users of MAC OSX there are two paths if you need to get real work done: use Parallels or VMware to run the Windows version on your MAC or run LOGOS 4 on your Windows machine.

Could they offer to allow MAC users who buy LOGOS 4 to have LOGOS 1 (LIbronix DLS 1????) licenses to run the old software on their MAC? if you have a PPC MAC it's the only version you can use anyway. Even if it is reduced function compared to LOGOS 3 or LOGOS 4 for Windows it is(was) quite usable for research.

I believe this funcationality already exists. All you need do is download 1.2.2 and syncronise your licenses.

The real problem is getting all the resources in the earlier format. You can either download them from the Logos FTP server or I think they are producing an updated DVD with these on them.

I guess I don't get all the cool stuff (must be too old). I thought Avatar was a cartoon my kids watch, and I don't know how to make the smiley things except for the keyboard kind. I'm sure it's simple, but I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe I need to hang out in forums more.

You will be taken to the "My Profile" section of logos.com. If you change Display Name, we will know whether to address you as Jim-Bob or Jackie Boy or whatever. You can than choose to upload an image. This image should be 60x60.

I can provide inappropriate Avatars upon request - or even when not requested (such as the current guinea pig and genius dog of 2 of our more prolific posters).
