If you collapsed all those items in your Passage Guide prior to closing it, L4 Mac would operate much faster. Good thoughts. Could be a bit smoother, though.

Use care, if you leave even one expanded when you close, several more will be expanded next time you open the PG. I have several Commentary panels in my custom guide. If I leave one expanded, the next open will have all commentary panels expanded. Rather annoying.
Totally. I know that the custom PG is the best route to go. I have Quad Core so it runs quick on my PC, and dual core on my Mac Book Pro, so keeping the "Logos 3" mentality of reducing background activity is still a good practice.
