Scripture Indexes???

Hi,

I am having an issue with using the Scripture indexes at the back of the books (or lack thereof). I am trying to find information on a passage or a chapter since most of the OT is narrative to see what other genres or figures of speech may be imbedded in the passage/chapter/book. The search <Bible=Gen 12:1-20> brings up no results for Bullinger's "Figures of Speech," but in the hard copy there are references to vv.1,3,5,9,15,16,18 and 19.If I just search <Bible=Gen 12:1>, I get 3 results in two passages. How can I search an entire chapter or book of the Bible (such as Gen. 12) in another book (such as Dictionary of Biblical Imagery) for the different figures of speech in the whole chapter since Logos books do not come with the Scripture indexes?

    Use the tilde operator instead of the equals sign:

    <Bible~Gen 12:1-20>

    The equals sign will only match references that include all 20 verses.  The tilde will match any reference that intersects with those verses.

    See here for a list of all operators and how they work:

    Try <Bible=Gen 12>

    Philana,

    Thanks, but nothing pops up. I tried that and a few others but none worked.

    You're welcome.

    Some shortcuts:

    • You can leave off the "bible" label in reference search patterns, because it is assumed by default: <= Gen 12:1-20>, <~ Gen 12:1-20>, etc.
    • You can leave off the operator too, and the tilde operator is assumed: <Gen 12:1-20> is the same as <~ Gen 12:1-20>
    • Also, you can leave off the angle brackets in most cases too, and Logos will automatically recognize it as a bible reference and not text.
    • Therefore: <bible ~ Gen 12:1-20>, <~Gen 12:1-20>, <Gen 12:1-20>, and Gen 12:1-20 are all the same search.

    So here is the easiest way to do your search:

    A similar question was posed here http://community.logos.com/forums/t/52400.aspx

    As you can see the approach to arrive at a solution was a bit clunky. Your handling of this question was exceedingly elegant and productive. Combining the strengths of the two approaches by using your Search form and combining the two resources (Bullinger's and The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery) into a collection; yields a powerful tool for the researcher. This post has taught me much. Thank you so much for sharing.
