Does anyone know when the Lewis and Short Latin Dictionary will be available?
Jessica - Currently, its in community pricing (see HERE). This means that Logos is gaging interest in the resource. It could be years away. In CP, Logos determines how much it will cost them to produce the Logos edition. In CP, users "bid" how much they are willing to pay. When enough people bid at a certain price point, the resource will go into production. Right now this resource needs more bidders before it will "cross the line" into production.
By the way, you would have gotten more views if you had posted this in the General forum rather than the Mac one.
Why I don't understand is why we cannot bid higher? I'd pay way more than $38 for that resource. Or am I doing something wrong?

Below is a screen shot of this CP. Notice that the peak is at $24. It seems that there are not many who would be willing to pay more than that… therefore there is no reason to increase the high side. Let me explain with more simple terms. Lets say the production cost was $100 and the price points were $1, $2, $3, $4 & $5. If the peak was 80% at $2, then there are 40 people willing to pay $2. Presumably none of those bidders were willing to pay more (or they should have bid more… a $5 dollar bid is also a bid for $2). There would be no need to raise the high price to $10 because you had already lost the bidders at $2. There WOULD be a reason to raise the high point if the high end had more action… For example, say the peak was 80% @ $2, but there were also 60% at $5. That would potentially indicate a desire for those on the high end to bid higher.
Or am I doing something wrong?
Yes. If you are interested in this resource, you need to convince others of its value. I have no idea what it is, for example (you would have to be much more convincing than "this is a great deal!!!" to get me to bid). You need to find convincing ways to advertise it in the GENERAL forum and market it towards those who 1) would benefit and 2) would pay for it.

I think there was a thread dedicated to this resource sometime in the last months. IIRC, this is the Latin dictionary. There is a contemporary edition of it, but what people looking at Amazon look-into and searching the web found, is that the current edition basically is a reprint of the classical, now PD one that Logos put on CP.
Obviously a Latin dictionary makes only sense if one has Latin language resources, and since no one downloaded Perseus or reads anything from between the fourth and the sixteenth century.... (OT snide remark: my irony holds true if you filter your library for Pubdate /OT).... actually it's mostly Perseus and the vulgata resources in my library: lang:latin gives some 280 resources, but lang:latin -perseus only 15.
Logos generally doesn't start producing resources until they have enough orders to cover their costs, which in this case means when the highest dot on the screenshot above crosses the 100% line. Given how slowly it's moved so far, that will likely take quite a bit of time. And then there's the actual production time, of course.

That's a big 'presumably'. The truth is that once the peak is settled, virtually no one bids higher, as it seems meaningless. I would imagine that many, perhaps most, of the $24 bidders would be willing to pay a few dollars more, but you are probably right that not many would be wiling to bid $38. Those who want it that bad presumably bid the highest whatever the peak is at.
I had another thought:
Given that we now have the Encyclicals, and that the Constitutions, the Missal, and the Canon Law are on the way -- resources that should be in any self-respecting Catholic base package -- is seems very possible that Andrew is thinking of updating the current base packages, perhaps when L5 ships. And if that is done, it also seems possible that Lewis & Short might be added to the highest one, which would fast track it into production.
Given how slowly it has moved through CP so far, that might be our best hope to get it before next Christmas. (Not that I personally am in much hurry, my Latin is far too bad for that. I'm one of those who'd prefer cheap over fast, I'm afraid.)

If that's the case, why not have a huge spread? Say, $1 - $2000? People who would and can pay more, do so. Those who prefer to contribute less - or value it less - pay less. Eventually, when it's actually for sale, if I pre-paid say $200 for this resource (which I would in a heartbeat), and it sells for only $150, what do I care? I just helped make it happen by contributing more. There may be many more people like me. Why leave $ on the table?

Because it would discourage people from bidding. I respectfully disagree with fgh. There may be a few bidders willing to pay more than the peak, but if so, they should have bid so. What people often fail to remember is that a bid for $10 is also a bid for $8, $6, $4, and $2.

Why? Why should they know I've pre-paid, say, $200? Another comes along and pre-pays $20, because that's what it's worth to him. Etc. Make it blind - we pre-pay, and thereby get to help make resources become a reality; and Logos gets its books pre-funded. If the project is abandoned, the money is returned.
I like your idea, Mr Micawber. But that's not how their system works. When the actual resource exits CP, it's priced a one value which allows paying for everyone bidding at that price or above.
So your high bid doesn't really do anything unless others agree and also join your bid. That's the system.
Your idea is more attractive. Many, many, many CPs I'd easily do '$150' since they're worth that to me. But again that's not their system.
The system isn't prepay, nor is that a good system. In most cases, CP titles are not begun until after bidding. You may bid on an item and not see it for a couple of years!
Thanks for explaining the bidding system! Guess we're just gonna have to wait... If they got this dictionary up, Logos could compete with so many of the Latin and Greek databases out there for Classicists!
Exactly, think of all the people who make daily use of Perseus or the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, etc. - methinks Logos would be very attractive to these people. Indeed, that's a large part of why I'm here. Moreover, Biblical studies are profoundly enhanced by a knowledge of classics/classical languages.
I have upped my bid to $30 as I want this resource!
I have upped my bid to $30 as I want this resource! I just upped mine to $30. I also do indeed want this resource! *smile* Peace to all!
