I installed Logos 4 on my Windows 7 machine a number of months ago, when I only had one user account. I now have two user accounts and would like to use Logos in the second account also. How do I make that happen?
Thanks for the help!
Logos is a one user per license program (http://www.logos.com/ArticleViewer/2090), so if both user accounts are for your personal use, you will need to install the program a second time for your second user account. At one time I had the released program in one user account, and the then current beta version in a separate user account. Logos on both accounts should be kept in sync automatically.
I will allow someone who uses L4 more than I to give a precise answer, but I will suggest the Logos Wiki...see the link at the top of the page.
Several of us run multiple user accounts to separate beta testing from the stable version. The wiki has instructions on how to install quickly on multiple machines. The same tricks can be used for multiple accounts on a single machine. Note, however, that these are not independent accounts. They still belong to a single individual.
Thanks for all the answers! Should be more than enough for me.
I normally run under a user account rather than an administrator account for security, however I find that I need to login to the administrator account when performing Logos 4 program updates because it doesn't install correctly under the user accounts. So I did a work around to get both accounts pointing to the same Logos 4 profile in Windows 7.
Here is the technical way I am able to run Logos 4 on multiple user accounts using the same profile (and thus with only one installation of Logos).
(1) I moved the Logos 4 folder to my desired location. I partition my drive and prefer to have my ~15GB Logos folder on a separate partition. So I moved the folder to the second partition.
I moved "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Logos4" to "D:\Logos"
*Note* - Moving the folder is optional, you probably don't need to do this if you prefer to leave the folder where it is. Just make sure you type in the appropriate path names for your setup and not necessarily the ones I posted as examples.
*Note* - The AppData folder is normally a hidden file so you'll need to show hidden files by clicking the Start orb > Computer > Organize > Folder and search options > View > Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives.
(2) I opened a Command Prompt with Administrative priviledges. To do this, click the Start orb and type "cmd.exe" in the search box. Right click on the cmd.exe shortcut and click "Run as administrator"
(3) I typed in the following command:
mklink /J "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Logos4" "D:\Logos\Logos4"
*Note* - Your Administrator account may have a different name assigned to it. All your user profiles can be found under C:\Users.
(4) Repeated step (3) for my user account(s) as well. So just replace the "Administrator" with the user account name.
This worked for me and have been using this approach ever since installing Logos 4. Whenever you switch accounts you'll have to re-type your username password, but otherwise it should work fine. Make sure to install program updates under the Administrator account. Updates to books should install fine on any account.
What this does is makes a junction shortcut to the new location. Thus, even though Logos is pointing to the path in the profile, it transparently loads the other location.
I'm guessing from these answers, you can have more than 1 account, but can only run 1 Logos4 at a time.
I know running multiple copies of a software is a major, major headache for programmers.
Currently I run multiple Libronix's at the same time, but they're in separate virtual boxes. I'd try virtual boxes for Logos4 but then I'd have to turn on the virtual box's internet access.
There had been a problem with Logos 4 duplicating notes when you had two running at the same time but I believe that has been fixed.
I normally run under a user account rather than an administrator account for security, however I find that I need to login to the administrator account when performing Logos 4 program updates because it doesn't install correctly under the user accounts.
An update of the Logos4 program doesn't require Admin elevation as it is installed in the account profile. If PreRequisites is being updated, though, the installer will request Admin credentials (in Vista and later Windows) and a UAC prompt will allow the credentials to be entered by a Standard User. This is the way it works by default in Windows 7 and it works for me!
So I did a work around to get both accounts pointing to the same Logos 4 profile in Windows 7.
How many random User Id's appear in \Logos\Logos4\Data?
What did you do with the contents of the Logos4 folder in the non-admin accounts?
Whenever you switch accounts you'll have to re-type your username password, but otherwise it should work fine.
Welcome [:D]
Wonder how many folder(s) with random names appear inside \Logos\Logos4\Data ? (from description of re-typing your username, suspect two)
Make sure to install program updates under the Administrator account.
Personally have custom installed Logos 4 to my F:\ Drive for use by a Windows 7 standard user. When Logos 4 pre-requisities need administrator elevation during installation, am prompted for administrative password. Note: my standard user has a Logos 4 folder in AppData\Local that has Logos 4 Installers.
Keep Smiling [:)]
There is one folder in \Logos\Logos4\Data.
I do not recall exactly. For me I had pointed the directories early on so the contents had not grown. I backed the folder up and made sure everything worked properly before deleting it though.
*EDIT* - I also didn't make my first paragraph clear in my other post. I decided to make use of one profile folder at the onset of installing Logos 4, it was not intended to be a workaround for not being able to properly install updates under the user account. Perhaps the update problem is related to my sharing the profile, though I am not sure. Normally if I try to update on the user account it will download and install, but then it does not install properly, the version is not updated correctly. I forget exactly what happens, but I just got in the habit of manually updaing in the Administrator account when program updates are available.
