Installing to Windows 8 Virtual Machine

Windows 8 RTM running in VirtualBox on Windows 7 Pro.

After installing PreRequisites I got a window stating essentially "An app needs .NET 3.5 - Download or Skip". The program msi continued downloading so I clicked "Skip" and performed a custom installation of L5 (no resource download).

When finished it started OK with the Sign-in window, Preparing Library and then Synchronising. The main window opened and then crashed (14:26 in log).

So I installed .NET 3.5 from Programs and Features - it took some time downloading additional files.

L5 still crashed (14:35).

Restarted the VM and L5 successfully opened (CTRL key held) to a Blank layout.

Used the scan command to get resources and indexing completed successfully.

Tried to open a Layout saved in L4 and L5 crashed again (below).

The crash details look to be the same as before i.e the crashes seem to be about loading L4 layouts, so I wonder if .NET 3.5 is needed?

Would you happen to still have the logs from the installation, specifically the logossetup.log file? Maybe there's a clue there.

I double-checked our Logos 5 installer components (bootstrapper, msi files, update scripts) for references to .NET 3.5 and didn't find any. The closest string would be, "The installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 did not succeed." Windows Installer will display the message, "The Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.5 is not installed on this computer. Please run LogosSetup.exe to install the .NET Framework." if you attempt to install one of the msi files without .NET 4.5 being installed.

Since we don't really have any dialogs like the one you describe, I wonder if it's a .NET dialog of some sort. I believe I've seen such a dialog when uninstalling .NET when there are still applications (Logos in this case) installed that require it, though I'm not sure how that works.

It sounds like Logos 5 crashed on loading the layout even after you installed .NET 3.5. Is that the case? If so, the crash seems unrelated to having .NET 3.5 installed, doesn't it?

I won't have access to that machine until I return home later this month!

It was an MS "wordy" dialog and L5 installation was allowed to continue. Maybe MS is trying to cover itself...

That's my theory, so I'll try to remove .NET 3.5 when I get back.
