How do I get two different columns to read and compare books?

You should find a small grey semi-circle at the bottom right of your screen (or potentially in another corner).
If you drag that you should end up with a split pane.

After you do what Graham mentioned, rotate your phone to landscape, and the columns will be side by side. If you leave it in portrait, the second pane will be below the first (this is for phones, I'm not sure how it looks on tablets since I don't have one).
