Automatic Software Updates

I think I read some other MVP's reporting this earlier... (Thomas maybe?)

It's my understanding that updates should not be automatic at this point... however... My MacBook automatically downloaded and installed alpha 5. My iMac did not, however. I tried changing the channel to beta/stable, did restarts, but no go.

A5 is available via "automatic" download in the same way that you received database updates unique to L5.

It uses a separate (unknown) channel. I thought I was getting a resource update and got A5 instead!

OK… But why did my MacBook update automatically and not my iMac? I didn't mess with any settings on either until after I experienced this anomaly. To clarify a bit further, I was using L5, a4 on both machines.

And it looks as though I - and others - had our systems set to this automatically.

It's the alpha channel. That's what we signed up to. There will be other channels which give the more dangerous nightly builds, I'm sure. This channel only gives builds that the developers believe are reasonably safe.

The beta download uses the beta channel as default. The alpha download uses the alpha channel as default. The release download uses the release channel as default.

The command field will give me "Intenal-Alpha" or "Alpha". Is there a difference? I'll give Alpha a go and see what happens.

Alpha doesn't work - at least on Windows. You can put anything you like in the command box and it will be accepted, but only channels that exist will 'work'.

I ought to add that I wasn't suggesting any of us set our channels to "internal-alpha" — if we do so, we'll very likely get stuck on the alpha when the beta is released. All I was saying was that if our update channel is default, then Logos will actually be accessing the "internal-alpha" channel for the duration of the alpha test. We should be using the default channel for alpha testing.

I had missed the announcement that Alpha 5 was now an automatic download - as opposed to the previous alphas which were manual

Interesting. I had assumed that only legitimate commands would appear in the selection list. Not even 0830 here, and I have already learned something today [H]

BTW: I did try entering "Dogfood" and it appeared in the selection list [8-|]

If the update channel was set to anything other than 'default' or 'internal-alpha' it wouldn't update (i.e. 'stable' or 'beta').

I'm curious as to how you discovered this. I poked around a bit and can't find anything that would hint at an update channel, let alone name one.

I use the Fiddler2 proxy to keep an eye on what Logos is up to. It gives the URL of the update RSS as https://clientservices.logos.com/update/v1/feed/logos5/internal-alpha.xml and past experience with L4 indicated that the bit before the .xml is the name of the update channel. If you set update channel to testchannel, then Logos will start looking for new builds at https://clientservices.logos.com/update/v1/feed/logos5/testchannel.xml (which will obviously fail)

I didnt change any settings on this until AFTER I noticed the discrepancy. Both of my computers were set to "stable" in L4. Both were updated to L5 alphas 3 & 4.
