Search Operator

I have looked through the Wiki and watched some videos; however, I have not found an answer to this question: If I am searching through my collection of Journals for an Introduction to Luke, how can I do this in way that will only return results that have an Introduction to Luke and not results for Introduction and Luke? Is there a specific search operator?

Have you tried searching that collection but limiting the search to heading text or large text. Also if you are looking for the specific phrase "Introduction to Luke" you can put the phrase in quotation marks to limit the search to that exact phrase

First off, journals don't tend to have introductions to books of the Bible; their articles are usually more specific.

A better place to look for Introductions to Luke would be the Reading List "Gospel of Luke" (in L4, open Tools > Reading Lists and search for "gospel of luke" or see it online at http://topics.logos.com/Gospel_of_Luke)

Rosie, I have been pleasantly surprised at how many different articles include a paragraph or more, if not an entire article on introductions or overviews of specific books of the Bible or chapters (ex. Matt. 24 or John 14). Again thank you for the resource suggestion. Fred, I have tried that technique; however,it has not been very successful. Most of the time I end up with information overload. Thanks for your help.

If anybody has any suggestions on how I can streamline the search process, I would be greatly interested in your input on how to efficiently search a journal collection. Help me to see the forest through the trees [:)]

You might try to search your collection with something like "Luke within 10 words of introduction"

A second option would be to start with your commentaries on Luke, see if they have bibliographies that mention some of the journals you own.

After some experimentation, I'd go for heading:("to luke", "in luke", "of luke") AND <Luke>, in a ranked search.

Strictly speaking, the AND <Luke> isn't necessary, but it will boost the rankings of articles that have lots of Bible references to Luke, which should increase relevancy.

None of the results are introductions to Luke's gospel, but I agree with Rosie, I don't think you'll find that in Journals. But you'll get lots of hits that deal with various theological themes in Luke as a whole, and several more that deal with entire chapters or larger episodes in the gospel.

If you want to try and exclude articles which only cover part of Luke, you could try (heading:"to luke", heading:"in luke", heading:"of luke") ANDNOT heading:<Luke>AND <Luke>

In your sugggestion, I noticed the less than and grater than signs. Could you enlighten me on their meaning and use? Better yet, is there a detailed explanation in the Wiki that I didn't see? Thanks

The angle brackets indicate that it's a Bible reference we're interested in, not just a mention of the word Luke. It's shorthand for <bible ~ Luke>. I'm on my iPhone currently, so it's not easy to check, but from memory I think the page you need is http:/wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help
