Beta 3 Notes have slowed to a crawl again

If this is not fixed prior to release of L5, the upgrade will not be well accepted by the Mac community. This is a frequent complaint in that forum.

Jack, what kind of crawl are you experiencing? I note about a 2-3 letter lag in my PC notes if I am typing quickly.
I like Apples. Especially Honeycrisp.

About the same with an occasional lag of 5-6 letters. Crawl may be a bit too strong to describe this lag. Truthfully, Notes are much improved, but if released with this lag, expect a howl from certain members of the Mac forum [8-|]

Did not have any of the MVP Mac users in mind—we are too civilized to howl [:D] However, there are some on the Mac forum who can raise a ruckus.

Can you provide information about, and a screen shot of, the layout you have open when you experience the lag? When using the layout you had previously reported was a problem, I do not experience any lag when editing a note.

What kind of hard drive do you have?

Layout does not matter. Typing in any note always produces a lag between a few letters to two or three words.
How fast did you type?
Indexing now, so cannot run a definitive test.

Since ince improvements began in Beta 3 for windows, the only significant lag I have is caused by the seat to keyboard interface.[:D]

Hi Jack,
I am working in Mountain Lion and have and tried touch typing in a moderately sized note file and small note file and do not think I am experiencing any lag. I have tried this with a simple layout (Bible, note file and resource), a more demanding layout (passage guide, several resources open, bibles linked) and have really tried hammering it to try and force lag, but am unable to reproduce the results you describe.
I am working on a MBA (with an SSD) and wonder if this accounts for the responsiveness (I am not sure whether you are on SSD or a hard drive)? Have there been other reports of lag from other Mac users during the latter stages of Beta testing?
Please excuse my inquisitiveness, but I agree that there are some feisty souls within the Mac forum and agree that there have been complaints of variable (and even unpredictable) performance for Mac user. I was wondering whether it was possible to get a sense from such a small sample group as to whether greater consistency of performance has been achieved with L5?

From all accounts, an SSD makes all the difference. I don't understand why it would make such a difference in typing notes, but that is the word on the street… which is why I asked Martin which kind of hard drive he was working from.
OFF TOPIC (slightly): My iMac is a couple of weeks from being out of Apple Care warranty. I know that there are SSD replacement kits, but I have heard the install is more than a bit challenging… If only I had some spending money and a steady hand. [:)]

It is strange that it makes such a dramatic difference. I have only ever used L4Mac with and SSD and my experience has been at least equal to that on the PC side. I do hope that some of the disappointed users experience a real difference with L5, which is why I was/am concerned that Jack is experiencing suboptimal performance.

There is a youtube video of someone doing this very thing. It seems to involving removing the screen. I fear I would be far too clumsy for such a delicate operation.
You are, sir, a braver man than I [:D].
While we are off topic, I am seriously tempted by the forthcoming iMacs with the fusion drive... Seriously stunning. Mrs Evans is, however, slightly less eager [:S].

I too am intrigued by the Fusion drive. I wish I could know in advance how the performance with Logos would be. I also wish I knew if you could force Logos files to the SSD part of the drive.

Do not have an SSD. Should not be necessary for such a simple operation as typing in notes.

Using 10.7.5 on a 2.66 Mhz twin dual core Intel Xeon (same core installed in the latest high-end Mac Pro models).

One of the helpful things about the Logos forums is that there will be users who will adopt this from the off and report back on the forums (I remember reading feedback on the performance of the Retinas within days of release).

I agree wholeheartedly.
You are also quite correct that Mac users will be looking/expecting an improvement in this area. I do hope any such performance issues in this area will be addressed as a priority.

Jack - I have to admit… I tried out notes during an earlier build and noticed a lag… I just tried it now and it was quick as lightning… but it was a plain jane layout. I will experiment more later. What is your layout like?
EDIT: I opened an older layout and began typing. Most of the time, the type kept up with me. On occasions, there were one or two words which did not show up for a couple of seconds. Once it caught up, it would type smoothly again. I am an <OK> typist. Those who type more quickly may experience it more than I did.

Don't think I had tried since installing SR-1. Just tried it in a small note file and had the same result you saw. However, I tried it in a huge note file, and the lag was enough to make the average user throw up his/her hands in frustration.
Bradley mentioned in another thread that the new note engine had not yet been implemented.

Jack I'm one of the howlers in the regular forums regarding the notes performance. I have an SSD on my MBP and did have serious lag on L4 but so far none at all on L5.

What is the average size of individual notes? Do you know about how many notes you might have in the document?

Cannot effectively test typing in note at this point, as my Library is undergoing its fifth automatic complete reindex [:'(].
Martin Potter said:What is the average size of individual notes?
Most are excerpts pasted from resources I was reading.

Will not take the time to count, but you can get some idea from this screenshot. See how many show on this page, and then note the size of the scroll position indicator. This is probably an abnormal file that should be broken up, but I am too lazy/busy to do so [;)]

Do you have the Highlighting Panel open in the Layout where you were experiencing the lag? If you close the Highlighting Panel, do you still notice the lag?

Yes

No. Hope you can fix this, as highlights is a primary means of creating notes.
