Windows 8 announcement today...

As we know, there are flavors of Win8. and RT is not compatible with xp/win7 apps.

Is there plans for a full-Logos app for RT/surface, or will it be an "app".

For me, when people say "tablet", most are saying iPad or android, and now RT. but to me - those are "tablet devices", and not "tablet PC's". I have had a tablet PC for more than a few years now. I tried using an ipad and the logos app, and tried an android and the logos app, but ended up giving them away since I was disappointed with the app. - Don't get me wrong, it currently does well, what it can in those environments, but for me, I have been working with "real" tablet PC's for so long, I was used to the full-featured, fully-functioning Logos software. Perhaps with RT/surface, the line between tablet device and tablet PC is thinning?

Going forward, though, I will probably be changing my tablet PC very soon. But I may switch to RT/surface, if I know that Logos software will run (not "just" an app). Having fully capable Logos software is what I use every day, and carry with me all day long in my Tablet PC.

Anyone?

I don't think anyone has said definitively yet. I suspect the RT version will only be an app though because most of the RT tablets I've looked at are limited in RAM and generally run on slower processors.

Personally, I've been thinking strongly about one of the hybrids. My sole reason for getting one will be running Logos, and I don't think it will run adequately on anything less that the full Windows 8 anytime in the near future. I'm thinking an Intel i5 or i7 with min 6-8 GB Ram. Leaning toward a Dell XPS 12, but still waiting to see more reviews on other systems. I tend to agree. I was not willing to take the performance hit, for the gain in portability. I settled on the Lenovo X220 Tablet PC.(Convertible/Hybrid) It has i7 and 8 Gigs of ram. Performance compares admirably to the Dell PC with 12 Gigs. It runs fine with W7...But, I have a copy of W8 reserved and will install it soon. It will undoubtedly give better tablet functionality. I doubt seriously i will install W8 on the desktop.

Brent – not to be too picky, but your terminology is confusing. The term "app" means "application," L4 is an "app" as well as the iOS and Android mobile apps. I agree with you about the confusion of the term "tablet." I personally think that it is preferable to use the term "tablet" only with iOS, Andriod, and now Windows RT. If I were referring to one of the other devices, I think "tablet PC" is ok, but most users of those devices get lazy and just call them "tablets."

As for Logos & Windows 8… Logos has already released a win 8 app (its a "verse of the day" app). Bob has made it clear that they are looking into the market. Some took his words to mean that they have already committed to the platform… I did not read his words that way, but it may be the case. In the past, Logos has always said that the market will lead the way. If a device has a market, Logos will look to see if it makes sense. I am not convinced one way or another if win 8 is going to be a hit. The reviews still seemed mixed.

As for what kind of app… It will certainly NOT be the full desktop app. The surface RT cannot run regular windows apps.

Just want to add that we just got a Windows 8 "METRO" Logos app called "Bible! " It is very simple, just to read a book or Bible. But it sees your library. It will grow into the full functional "METRO" application, as we see from this thread: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/57269.aspx

To clarify, it will become like the iOS & Andriod apps:

the current version is very basic but we are working hard to match the functionality provided by the Logos Bible app on the iOS and Android platforms.

Of course. But it might be useful (if it grows a little bit in functionality) for just plain opening Bible and looking at some portion of Scripture - without the necessity to open full Logos. And of course for RT version of tablets it will be must. Also for the Windows Phone 8 devices. Go for it Logos. I want to change my iPhone for Nokia [:)].

Imho,

a device that is really going to put the crush on computing and mobility is the ARM powered samsung chromebook its interface is Ubuntu Linux based and for anyone who has used chrome browser there is basically no learning curve. I could go on and on singing it's praises but my hard earned dollar is voting for this new release over a crowd of products. The cost and capabilities of this baby will shock.

Surely the longer-term future has got to be a single device that combines tablet and Ultrabook PC. The new Microsoft devices are heading in the right direction. However, I don't see myself committing to this until that one device can truly replace both my iPad and my PC: run full programs like Logos at a good speed, all-day battery life, the simplicity and portability of a tablet, but a keyboard when needed, the speed and touchscreen interface of mobile apps. We have to wait for the hardware to catch up with the concept. It will come in time. Perhaps Windows 9 will do the whole lot and have just one version.

Though honestly a bigger screen would be great for using full-featured Logos software. I currently also use a USB-powereed, external touch screen also , when I use it at a "sit-down" situation, for that extra desktop space. I will be installing Win8 at first opportunity.

I am really, I guess, mostly hoping that Logos takes the touch interface more seriously and does something to at least make that an option with the Logos software.

I especially like this one. Detachable. Good screen. Good Processor. SSD in the tablet with and HD in the dock. Only thing I'm not sure about is the 4GB Ram. It doesn't yet show any other options for increasing that. I'd like to get around 6-8 GB to feel comfortable. Also, the 13" screen seems a bit big, wondering about battery life.

They way I explain it (and it has it's problems) is "app" = for tablets/phones/etc (Android, iOS, Win8 RT, BB). For full applications (Win, Mac OS, etc) I use the term programs.

Surface RT tablets will run apps in the mobile world sense. Surface Pro (I believe January 2013 is expected) will be a full Windows 8 that will run both apps and programs. Besides Microsoft, there are a few manufactures that are putting out Windows 8 Pro tablets.

A few questions some are wondering about Windows 8 Pro is that it's designed for touch and many traditional programs having been designed for touch. Until it comes out there's no way to really know have smooth full programs will work. Yet those Windows 8 Pro tablets like the Surface are going to be pricey. I imagine no less than $900 (but that's just my pure speculation).

I just view it as strange that many people seem to be critical of laying of Surface RT because it won't run full programs. Is there any kind of tablet that does (not talking about tablet PCs - that's a different kind of beast)? None that I'm aware of. But I believe part of the program for this is Microsoft not making a clear distinction (Apple while close is OS X (cat name) and iOS - but at least they are on different numbers)
