Indexing Toll On Hardware

I'm feeling a little nervous about the wear and tear of indexing on my Macbook Pro. I'm seeing temperatures of +70C and then having to let that sit like that for 24+ hours doesn't give me a good feeling. I read another post where someone actually experienced a hard drive failure. I know that they are probably rated to run at these elevated temps but how many of you would drive your brand new car for 24 hours straight in a low gear just below red lining it? (I know, that's probably not a good comparison). I don't have a problem with indexing over a short period of time (an hour or two) but indexing for literally days just makes me nervous. Obviously, the benefits of having indexed your entire library are tremendous. Indexing finished pretty fast on the PC side but I guess the Mac indexing just isn't there yet, so I think I'm going to wait for a later release and save the wear and tear on my computer. Logos: keep up the good work, I'm really impressed with Logos4.

One thing to keep in mind is that all this indexing in the alpha versions may need to be done again for various betas and then the release. I am sure they (Logos) will try and keep this to a minimum but the reality is that once this goes gold it may require additional rebuilds.. .

@Pat - You should see an extreme improvement between Alpha indexing and the Final Release. Some of the early Beta versions for the PC were exactly what you are describing. Think it may have done in my desktop, but it was overdue anyway - over 7 years old and I only tried it out to see if that system could run it...

However now the indexing is very fast in comparison and really doesn't draw much on the processor.

I thought the same thing, particularly because I was having so much trouble with indexing on Alpha 3 & 4. I decided on balance to wait until the software goes Beta (or the Alpha looks like it is really starting to take off), before jumping in again. The reason for this is that I was spending all my time indexing and very little time actually trying to use the software. If I had a test machine, it would be a different story, but I don't so I'll wait just a bit longer.

I have worried about the same thing, but I do note that the Alpha 5 only required about 20 minutes of indexing on my Macbook. Hope the briefer indexing is sustained.

Always buy Apple Care. I have purchased many Macs since 1984, and I always purchase Apple Care. Most Macs never have a problem, but it only takes one failure to pay for several contracts. I have saved far more than I have spent.
