Like buying a 3rd edition?

Perhaps those who are riled by the fact that they have to pay for books they already own should re-think how they are looking at this. If I understand what the publisher (Logos) is trying to say (poorly, I grant you), they are offering us new editions, just like a print publisher will do upon occasion.
When I entered seminary I bought BAGD, 2nd edition. It worked great and got me thru seminary. Years later when Danker released the 3rd edition I had to buy the newer edition to enjoy the many additions like the longer definitions, better fonts & etc.
I think that's what's going on here with Logos 5. The new books may have the same titles but it sounds like the databases have been extensively tagged and other improvements have been made. Voila, a new edition that would, if it were a print edition, you'd have to pay for - again.
The most confusing part of this whole thing has been the terrible decision to use the same product names (Gold, Silver, Platinum, etc.). That is a major marketing blunder that's gonna cause pain for a long time.
So, in thinking this through, I'm not at all upset. For those volumes I'd like to have the new editions, I'll gladly pay for it. For those I don't think the new features needful, I'll continue using the older editions.
One last word: I hope Logos learns from this snafu and does a better job of marketing, packaging and rolling out a new product in the future. A lot of needless pain here. A lot of angry people (in part because they haven't clearly understood what's being offered here - a marketing problem).

Bud,
I appreciate your comparison to BAGD/BDAG and concur that much of the problem has been the re-use of the product names.
One issue I have with your post is the beginning:

Your conclusion is valid, however, it's not a "fact" that people have to pay for books they already own. The point of the new upgrade calculator is that people only pay for additional books and functionality.
