Will Logos update automatically try to update my netbook from Logos4 when they sync?  I also bought some other collections that I do want on my netbook, will Logos update them?

Meant to say I upgraded my desktop to Logos on a silver to silver upgrade but I don't want to upgrade my netbook.  Any way of avoiding this?

Rob, you will need to open L4 on the netbook and go to Program Settings and turn "Automatically Download Updates" to No. Then you will need to update manually to get the new updates to L4 as they are released.

But if your netbook runs on Windows XP OS (many netbook do) then Logos update should respect that and not force Logos 5 to your netbook. So in this case you should be able to keep Automatic Updates setup to YES.

Can you now control what updates you download?  Will it not automatically download L5?  İ shall have the same problem with my cheap and nasty expendable travelling netbook.

If I remember it right, Bradley said it in the Beta forums that Logos 5 installer will not try to install on Windows XP machine. SO it should be no need to switch Automatic Downloads to NO. This way it should work to have Logos 5 on your newer OS and Logos 4 on your Win XP machine.

Thank you for your responses.  I turned on my netbook with auto updater and it tried to download 1.25GB of resources.  In this process it synced with my desktop reading plans and downloaded several resources I purchased when I upgraded to Logos 5 Silver. An error message also appeared and the downloading ceased.  I didn't send the error message as I believe it was about not being able to work with XP which is the netbook's OS.  So Logos 4 seems to be operating well on my netbook and it synced with my Logos 5 reading plans on the desktop.  Hopefully it will continue to work well.

    Thanks again for your replies.

  • Rob, you can install the resources, just get prepared for some serious indexing. A colleague of mine had to index for about 24 hours or more on a netbook when he first got L4. Heard of one individual who put his old laptop in the fridge just to keep it from overheating during index.

My cheap and nasty new netbook is windows 7 but only one gig memory.  Maybe İ shall uninstall logos from it, or at least not update, and do bible study from ipad.  Or maybe L5 will run less slowly than L4?

I have a netbook that serves me well. Indexing takes just 3 hours (Portfolio...3000 plus resources) Cold Logos start-up is 20 seconds...compared to 5 seconds on the desktop. A search for "God" across the entire library took 15 seconds and produced over 3 million hits.(compared to 2 seconds on the PC) Is it slower?...of course. It only has 2 Gig of ram and an atom processor....but it certainly doesn't take 24 hours to index...and I have never had to refrigerate it while doing so. [:P]

My old netbook downloaded 1.4 GB or the new Silver yesterday noon and is still chugging away indexing.

Full Disclosure: I did install an SSD. That undoubtedly contributes to the performance.

Logos 5 shouldn't be slower, rather the opposite. There is a new Display optimization in Logos 5. If you have Win 7 on that there is no reason to use Logos 4. The only reason IMHO not to upgrade to Logos 5 is for those who want to keep Windows XP OS on their notebooks or netbooks.

EDITED: Of course your memory is very small. If possible I would add (change) RAM. But that is the same with Logos 4 as for Logos 5.

You are absolutely correct. My netbook is maxed out at 2 Gigs of ram. Windows 7 can gobble up 1.5 Gigs...just to keep the lights on. not much left to power the programs. I'll stick with XP on the little guy. [:)]

did I miss something?  does L5 require win7 or greater? I have win8 on my tablet pc ep121, and win7 home, and pro on my other boxes - but some of my students still have XP.

Actually, Vista or above...L5 requires net 4.5, which is not supported on XP. I am told some geeks have been able to load net 4.5 on XP machines, but you can't do it through Microsoft...It's definitely a hack.

In September, we officially announced that XP support would be discontinued on October 26: http://blog.logos.com/2012/09/advanced-notice-on-discontinued-platform-support/

Service Releases for 4.6a will continue to be made available for XP, but Logos 5 is not available for that platform. (It requires Windows Vista SP2 or later.)

I put a 32GB SSD PATA Ziiff in an old HP netbook with 2 GB RAM. It had also 5GB of space left when I upgraded from old Silver to Logos 5 Silver.  It downloaded

1.2GB of resources and then after about 2 hours stopped indexing with less than 1 GB space available.  So I'll turnoff auto update and use what I have. I already compressed the drive.  Oh well.
