Cheaper to buy a new package than to upgrade

Has anyone realise that it is cheaper to buy a brand new package than to upgrade your old one?
Let’s say you have bought a ‘blue
package Logos 4’ for $2000 and the ‘blue package Logos 5’ cost $2400. If you
want to upgrade your ‘blue Logos 4’ to ‘blue Logos 5’, LOGOS will give you,
let’s be generous, 35% discount of the new package, which is a new total of
$1560. Have you got it? If you are a new customer and you want to buy ‘a blue
package’, it would cost you $2400, but if you are already a loyal customer and
you want to upgrade it, it would cost you a total of $3560 (The original $2000 plus $1560 for the upgrade)! You are paying
$1160 extra!!! Even though you are a loyal customer, LOGOS is charging you 167% additional for the very same resources.
That is not fair at all! It seems that LOGOS care a lot more for new customers than for the old ones.
It does not matter what package you have, you are paying a lot more for upgrading than you think. The better your package, the worse your discount. Do the maths by yourself. Think about it. The next year when LOGOS 6 come out you will have exactly the same problem. I wish I can go out, but I have spent too much money on LOGOS. I must keep in.
I feel so disappointed of LOGOS. I would expect a fairer deal from LOGOS. A sad day for me.

Yes and no. While you might end up paying more with L4 & L5 upgrade than a person who just has L5, but the person who has L4 + L5 upgrade will have more resources than the person who just has L5.

Daniel, welcome to the forums.
First, I don't think your understanding reflects what is really going on. While the names of most of the packages have remained the same, the contents have dramatically changed. So when you upgrade to the same Blue package in L5 you are getting many new resources and the upgrade calculator only charges you for what you don't have already. Your $3560 bought all the former Blue resources and a bunch of new ones in the new Blue. A new buyer only gets what is in the new package, not the stuff that was in the old package you have but is no longer there.
Check the New to You button on the update page to see what your $1560 would be paying for.
Unfortunately keeping the same names for the packages has caused a lot of misunderstanding and was a poor decision.

The way Logos says it will work is that you choose to add L5 Blue to your existing package. But the new L5 Blue is substantially different to the L4 Blue.
So for the sake of argument L5 Blue has 10 resources each costing £20 but they are h, j, k, m, n, p, q, r, s, and t
(for the new purchaser the cost is £200 + the cost of a, b, c, d, e, f, and g.[£70] total cost £270)(if these resources can still be purchased for £10)
to add L5 Blue though you already have h, j, and k so you knock £60 off the upgrade price of £200 = £140 add that to your original purchase £100 and the existing user has the deal for £240.
I know that not all books are equal and that we have not taken into account any discounts being offered in the sale at the moment but the principle is the same.

I think the confusion is in the reuse of package names. It isn't actually cheaper, as I can see, because "blue package Logos 4" is not the same as "blue package Logos 5". If you just by "blue package Logos 5" you will get Y resources. But "blue package Logos 4" has X resources. They are different sets. There may be some overlap between them, but they are really different. So upgrading you get X + Y (with some overlap, hence the reduced price). If you just bought "blue package Logos 5" you would only have Y resources without the other X resources (minus overlap) that were in the older "blue package Logs 4".
But I understand where you are coming from. I was quite upset when I saw this at first. I don't think Logos is "tricking" us or robbing us, but they are using marketing tactics to promote upgrading. If you want to move to Logos 5 now, you must upgrade. Otherwise, wait a bit and cross-grade later. We feel we are being forced to upgrade in order to get Logos 5 when we don't have to. Then there is the "sigma" of dropping in base package level--that is our attachment to status.
So while the marketing tactics are misleading and confusing, I don't see any robbing. I can choose to be patient (a godly virtue) and wait for the cheaper options coming later (as has been posted in these forums already). Or I can be willing to "lose status" now and drop to a lower base package title and get Logos 5 now, realizing that the base package label is mainly a status issue as I am not losing any of my previous resources at all. In fact, I'm not losing anything at all, that I can see. Or I can choose to upgrade and get the new resources in a higher package. The choice is mine. Nothing is being forced.
However, I would say to Logos that this was a marketing mistake, how this was approached. It should have been approached with more upfront information. The option for later cross-grade should have been on the upgrade page from the get go. And the upgrade page should have been clearer around the ramifications of upgrading and why it isn't necessary to take the same base package "title" as one has now. I think all the complaints here in the forum are due to this marketing and information sharing error. People are upset and alienated by this. I was very upset until I realized what was going on. Then I calmed down. But I understand why others have not yet calmed down due to lack of clear information.

The original post is not entirely correct. To illustrate:
I ordered Logos 4 Platinum during the Christmas sale last year and the final price was $1430.
Now, the current Platinum with more resources retails for $2150, but they are offering a %15 discount which takes off appr. $320. So the current price is about $1830.
Next, they discount the resources that are already in my library, saving me about another $1150 making my upgrade price $680.
Now, if I add my original cost of L4 Platinum to the upgrade price I get a total of about $2110, which is currently slightly less than the retail price of L5 Platinum.
So, if I had waited I would be paying almost $300 less (L5 Platinum sale = $1830), but then I would not have the additional resources that may have been dropped from L4 to L5, plus the free resources I obtained from other offers over the year (such as the monthly free books).
Although it should be noted that some users did not obtain L4 on sale like I did and paid the retail price, in this case they are definitely paying more than the full retail price of L5 (at least when using the Platinum as an example), but not by the amount you stated in the original post. It is probably $300 - $500 over the L5 Platinum retail price.
In conclusion, the original post was partially correct in that it is costing the user to upgrade more, but I do not think as high as the amount suggested.

I upgraded to Logos 5 today, and unlike just about everyone else here, I've been ecstatic about this new upgrade. Why?
I have L4 Platinum, and upgraded to L5 Platinum. It cost me $670, but I got several resources that I've been intending to buy anyway.
Theological Lexicon of the Old Testament $100
Theological Lexicon of the New Testament $90
Preaching the Word Commentaries $450
Exegetical Summaries $500
Black's New Testament Commentary $250Just with those, I'm saving a bundle with the upgrade!
Plus with the package (which you can get with the "customize" button with any L5 package), I was able to get a special deal on several other products:
Boice Commentaries for $80 (regularly $400)
Anchor Bible Dictionary $155 (even cheaper than the $200 deal I got last week, and I got reimbursed for it)
German Bible Society Student Edition $130 (cheaper than the $200 deal currently running)
ESV Study Bible notes $29But what if I had not bought Logos 4 Platinum, and bought Logos 5 Platinum directly?
I would have missed out on a number of fantastic resources:
Ten volumes of the Pillar New Testament Commentary
The New International Greek Testament Commentary
A. W. Pink Collection (in Diamond and Portfolio only)
Great Doctrines of the Bible (in Diamond and Portfolio only)The Baker commentaries (Hendriksen/Kistemaker, BECNT) if you bought it in 2011
I would be kicking myself if I hadn't been able to get a L4 package and upgrade!
I'm not always so appreciative of Logos, but today, count me as one very happy customer.

I keep eyeing and testing that "customize" feature. I'm getting really excited. However, my wife keeps looking over my shoulder and seems more nervous than usual for some reason. And where did my credit cards go?! [;)]
