Question for Logos

Okay, so my parents have been thinking of getting Logos since Logos 4. I showed them the REALLY cool new features and they were MUCH more willing to get it. They STILL want to get it, but they are annoyed that Logos got rid of the base package they were looking at: it had enough of the features that my mom would NEED, but was not even $400. But Logos did away with that, so they are VERY annoyed. To make matter worse, there is a HUGE jump from the Starter to the Bronze edition. The starter does not have all of the Databases/Data Sets, features, and timelines that my mom will NEED, but they cannot afford anything more than that. And my mom will need those features found in the Gold edition for preparing for a teaching for service.

So, here is the question: is it possible to purchase those features, timelines, and databases/data sets as addons to the Starter base package. I can tell you with certainty that most of the books found in Bronze, Silver, and Gold will be useless to her. But there are books, bible dictionaries, bible commentaries, bibles that she will want to add (most of which are not even in the Portfolio edition, so she will be adding them anyway). The following are the features that she will NEED in Logos:

  • New Testament Semantic Domain Coding
  • New Testament Genre Coding
  • Pronunciation Tools
  • Tooman Literary Genre Coding of the Old Testament
  • Thematic Outlines
  • New Testament Genre Coding
  • Phrase Concordance
  • Preaching Themes
  • Timeline
  • Clause Search
  • Referent Data
  • Reported Speech
  • Bible Sense Lexicon
  • Bible Word Study: Grammatical Relationships
  • Bible Word Study: Example Uses
  • Bible Word Study: Phrase Search
  • Bible Word Study: Preposition Diagrams
  • Bible Word Study: Textual Searches
  • Exegetical Guide: Apparatuses
  • Exegetical Guide: Grammars
  • Greek Pronunciation
  • Morph River
  • New Testament Genre Coding
  • New Testament Semantic Domain Coding
  • Old Testament Genre Coding
  • Passage Analysis Tool
  • Passage Guide: Compare Versions
  • Passage Guide: Literary Typing
  • Pericope Sets Database
  • Pronunciation Tools
  • Sentence Diagramming
  • Sermon Starter Guide
  • Universal Timeline
  • Visualizations
  • Syntax Search
  • Clause Search
  • NT Referent Visual Filter
  • Reported Speech Visual Filter
  • Bible Sense Lexicon
  • Bible Word Study: Senses
  • Bible Word Study: Septuagint Translation
So, the above are what my mom would like to add to the Starter base package. Is there a way to do that?

I think the minimal crossgrade will supply a portion of this.  She might need to purchase some of the other items separately.

If I understood the original post correctly, his parents do not currently have a copy of Logos and thus the crossgrade would not work.

If Logos implements it as they did in L4, it will. Why should it not? Even the free engine will work, and the MC adds databases and features to that.

I think http://www.logos.com/4ways is still available that shows the options for L4. I used the L4 Minimal Crossgrade (plus additional resources but without a "real" base package) for several months before buying a package.

Wow. This is getting to be pretty awful. I'm sure glad I got my Original Languages way back when. I can't imagine what the OP's parents are going to do. Maybe there's another solution for them.

EDIT: Maybe NB's solution is it. But if I were Logos, and given the cost-recoup, I'd assume the crossgrade would have to be 'up there'.

The minimal crossgrade has been announced as an option that is coming, but they are still working out some details regarding resources and exact pricing. If it were me I would hold off until all of the options are clearly stated and available and then make a decision.

Peace to you, Caleb!           *smile*                and ...   Always Joy in the Lord!      You must have quite the mother, my friend.  I am a retired pastor with 9 years post secondary education;and I`m sure that I don`t really need some of the items your mom needs.....

Just went over your list again and am quite curious ....     Your Mom really needs a Bible Word Study: Septuagint Translation .....             Wow, indeed!      *smile*

Your dear mother is quite unusual and must be right in the middle of some great academic studies right now!             Wow!

Okay. First off: my mom does not have logos 4. So the crossgrade option won't work. Second: my mom (and me) like seeing the Greek words that are used for Hebrew words. It helps when going from the Greek new testament to the Hebrew Tanakh. She earned a biblical languages major from Luther college in NE Iowa. I learned Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek as a part of my Old Testament major New Testament minor at Oral Roberts University. So studying the Greek words used for Hebrew words within the lxx is important to both of us.

I think you're wrong about the crossgrade not working for you.  Why not wait a bit and see what the situation is?

That, Dear Caleb, is "crystal clear"!  God bless you and your family and give you His Joy and Peace!  Well Done for taking your Mom's needs to heart!  After a few days of Logos 5 posts on these forums, I find your attitude refreshing and inspiring!               Thank you!

I asked. My dad said "no. No room in the budget for a payment plan."
