Kittel - papier or digital version

Hi!

I have never use Logos app. Now I would like to buy 'Kittel - Theological Dictionary of the New Testament'.

I can buy papier used version (150$) or Logos (200$). What should I choose?

What is better to read: paper version or digital version? What do you prefer?

Is it tiring for eyes to read books from screen?

the TDNT is a book one usually doesn't read cover to cover, but uses as a reference. Thus, the question of "tiring to the eyes" doesn't come up as much as reading novels or other book-type resources. I personally have no problem reading long hours on the PC - the typical small font of paper-based reference works streeses me more.

Thus, I think especially with works like TDNT, you'll find it helpful to adjust print size, maybe choose a more convenient font (especially for the Greek!), jump from one position to the next (paper TDNT is ten volumes, or someone tries to fool you with the abridged version) etc.

What's more: in Logos you have a Greek NT and go directly from there to Kittel, maybe see a reference to another scripture there and jump back into the bible. You may compare your favorite English translation etc. pp.

To sum up: I wouldn't even think of buying this in paper.

Absolutely. Some books we could debate whether they would be better on paper or electronically. This isn't one of them.

Ditto. Did you notice this is becoming a pretty universal response from those of us who have both?

You might like to check out which base packages have TDNT included, and then decide whether that's going to be better value for you in the long-run than merely purchasing the one resource.

I would get the digital edition. It should also be noted that the paper edition consists of ten large volumes and will take up the bulk of any shelf.

In hardback version, I use the abridged version of Kittel. This gives me a quick overview. And if I want to go more indepth I use the digital version in Logos.

Thank you for your suggestions. I decided to buy Logos version, but it can be hard for me at the beginning to read from screen (on desk you can open 5-10 books and compare; on screen - you can't when you have opened MS Word [I can, but then everything is small])

BTW: Can you recommend any good "flashcards" software? To organize my notes from books?

lol, I remember those days--books spread out all over my desk or the library. But I hear you: the more you have open on your monitor and want to see all at once, the harder. There are some ways around that, depending on your needs and system:

1. I'm assuming you realize you can adjust the size of window or TDNT--depending on which you need to be larger. If you want to make Word legible, do so: make TDNT's footprint on the screen smaller, but increase the size of the TDNT font--so you can read. You may need to scroll more, but you can see it well AND navigate Word easily. Or, conversely, if you are mostly cutting and pasting, make Word smaller, and TDNT bigger. little adjustments here and there might help you.

2. I use DeskPins (google it) to pin my word on top, so that I can see it at the same time I use Logos. that way, I don't have to resize the whole Logos interface. I only position Word on top of what I don't need to read in Logos. I leave space for TDNT (in this case). With Word pinned, I can place my cursor in Logos and mess around and not have Word move to the back of my window.

3. Like Allen mentioned, you can use Logos Notes--they are cloud synced so you will always have your notes accessible, if you might be changing computers duringyour writing.. You can link to various resources, etc. Some people also use OneNote, which docks on a narrow strip to the right of your screen. you can still take notes, it doesn't use a lot of realestate, and you can always format it later in Word (copy/paste/reformat as needed). And it can be cloud synced.

4. Buy a second Monitor. Or two. Or three. I covet Super Tramp's system (MVP. he ought to post his system here). Then you CAN have multiple resources opened to full size!

Have you tried Logos Clippings???? I think they rock! You copy a quote and have space to write a note about it, and you can flip the note around and see the bibliographic info on the back. way cool. and you already own it.
