What is the foundation of L5?

L4 is based on .MONO which many of us on the Mac felt was a mistake and the source of bugs and slowness (although at first our concerns were dismissed).

I haven't seen any information about what the underlying engine is that drives L5. From some comments it appears that the .MONO philosophy has been abandoned. I sure hope so.

Is L5 now written in Java? Some other multi-platfomr foundation? This information could relieve my concerns and influence how soon I upgrade.

I would like to know as well, however, if memory serves me well, I think the owner had stated .Mono would not change as they had so much code invested in it.

As I look at the L5 About screen, it appears that Mono still gets a mention in the licensing.

There is no mention of Java/Oracle.

L5 still uses mono but, if memory serves, an updated version. I'm not a mac user but by all accounts I've read L5 is much faster and more responsive than L4.

L5 Mac is based upon an updated version of MONO.  I'm a PC (don't shoot!) so I cannot comment further on it.

Hmm Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

I was always told to watch out who you kiss… you might catch MONO. [:P]

If you are concerned about it, I would suggest that you wait. I really like L5, it is a really big improvement, but it isn't perfect. I wish Bob were a former Apple employee instead of Microsoft, and we heard PC users complaining instead of us Mac users… [:D]

All joking aside, I think you will like it… but without knowing what your issues and experience with Logos have been, I think it is safer to wait. I know from personal experience that expectations make a BIG difference in my impressions of a product. If you get the free engine, I think you will be pleased with the improvement and you may end up updating your base package (or at least getting the minimal cross grade) so that you can get the new features.

I am a developer who uses multiple languages, and I wish they would have used Java for Logos. While I haven't used .net in a long time, I'm sure it's nicer to develop for Windows using that instead of Java, but it's a shame that they lose portability. I have to imagine that Java is nicer than banging your head against mono and trying to cram your .net usage into whatever has been implemented in mono. I'm pretty sure Java would be up to the task on both platforms (and linux).

One Mac update they seem to have made was pushing UI work to its own thread. It used to be that I would do something in Logos, and as it was thinking, I couldn't do anything else. But now I notice that the UI updates seems to happen independently of other work. Or, if they were doing this before, it seems to be implemented better. One funny side effect on my slow machine is the UI queue. As I roll my mouse over links in the Passage Guide, it highlights all off them in the order I go over them, but the highlighting happens well after my mouse has entered and exited the link.

The Logos 5 application bundle includes 6 frameworks: Appscript, Awesomium, Growl, LayoutKit, MarshalUtility, and MonoHost.

MonoHost has a Short Version of 5.0.0.1835

Personally Thankful for Logos 5 Full Screen on OS X 10.8.2

    Keep Smiling [:)]

I downloaded L5 last night. It is much faster than L4 and has not crashed or frozen up on me yet. My first impression is that it is much better than L4.

Thanks eveeryone for your replies. It is helpful. I will go to L5 when the crossgrade is available.

Noticed the Starter package includes a number of media resources so Starter plus minimal crossgrade is attractive.
