why not keep both of logos 3 and logos 4?

Hi all,

I am wondering and thinking loudly. why should i upload to logos 4 and i am fine with 3. keep 4 and keep 3. Actually i can not keep upgrading my pc and keep buying and selling pcs. i like 3 like some others so keep it with logos 4 please. do not force me to upgrade to logos 4 keep the options open. I hope you understand this. I know logos 4 is keeping up to date with technology but iam not.

what do you think brothers? are there people thinks like me?

Can you have both Logos4 and Logos3 on the same computer? Yes.

Can you keep using Logos3 for the next few years and not upgrade to Logos4? Yes. No one is forcing you to upgrade to 4, or not use 3.

I am 100% with you. I just love everything about Version 4 buy I also want to keep using Version 3 for years to come. I don't think providing resources in both file extensions is all that difficult. I still want my PBB library and be able to run Logos on my old laptop. I am afraid that we may someday be forced to abandon Version 3 because it will remain popular and contribute to the sluggih adoption of Version 4. You can see this trend in the recent removal of all Version 3 boxed base packages from third party sellers. Why not market both indefinitely?

I do not work for Logos Corporation. However, Logos has assured us that we can still use Logos3 as long as we have the technology to run the program. Logos3 is not dependent on internet connectivity and there is no way to shut down Logos3, even if Logos Corporation wanted to, which they don't. Nothing in the Logos3 software is designed to fail after a certain amount of time.

If it were easier to search these forums, I would point you to the place where the Logos CEO discusses this.

Logos will continue to do this, for now.

Some (not all) your questions may be answered by looking at this FAQ. Just search in your browser for "Logos 3" and it should eventually get you a partial answer to some of your questions.

I hope you know that you can't just change the resource extension to make a Logos4 book work in Logos3 (or the other way around). That won't work, since the structure of the resource is different and Logos 3 won't be able to read it. Also, Logos4 directly reads lbxlls resources, don't change the file extension to "Logos4" as that may confuse the program.

Be comforted. My understanding from what Logos has said is they will continue to work hard to support Logos 3. I cannot say how long, but you will be fine using Logos 3 for a while yet.

I think some of the new resources coming out are for Logos 4 only but Logos will be releasing a way to load those resources into Logos 3.

Bottom line, you should be fine continuing with Logos 3 for a while.

Welcome to the forums... I, too, am a user, as are others who have responded to you. Although you may not find a direct answer to your questions all in one place, nevertheless there are answers.

Logos 2 still works. Logos continues to support migrating those resources forward. New resources backward to L2? No.

They've said they'll develop for both Logos 3 & Logos 4 "for awhile." When the L4 missing features list is empty, it's doubtful how much longer that'll happen. Once again, they'll support migrating L2 & L3 resources forward to L4. After some point, they'll develop new resources for L4 only.

So... for about the next 6 months, you likely will be able to acquire new resources in L3 that were developed for L4. At some point after Logos "finishes" L4, you won't.

Nevertheless, L2 & L3 will still work "as-is" with all the resources you acquired for them (as does 1.6, for that matter).

It costs too much to support a shrinking customer base. As long as Logos can continue to make enough money to support the costs for reworking resources for previous releases, it will do so. Once it becomes obvious that they cannot cover their costs to do this, they'll stop. It's simply a matter of being able to financially afford to continue doing what you're asking.

Technology advances and methods change. Book files are formatted a particular way. To continue producing books for L2 means even more work for people entering, tagging, and processing old books. As for L3, again, I think Logos will be enabling L3 to read L4 books. This would not be so easy for L2 where things are so different.

Plus at some point a company needs to stop supporting old software. The more effort a company has to address to old, outdated software, the less effort they can give to new projects.

I am quite the opposite of David the Psalter. I have just jumped into the world of Logos 2 days ago by purchasing the Leaders Library. However I discovered that I have received Logos 3. The store kindly suggested that I get a free upgrade to 4 from Logos or return it to them for a full refund.

I'd much rather receive Logos 4 than return the Logos 3 but could anyone advise I can go about getting a free upgrade (if any)?

I really like speed search too. Bob has asked us what we like about it and many chimed in. This suggests that something like this is being considered (at least).

You may be interested to know that 4.0a Beta3 has a Datasheet view of search results that allows for multiple ways of looking at (i.e. analyzing) search result data.

If I'm searching in a Bible that corresponds to Strong's numbers (or Heb/Grk, etc.), then in the corner I have options like: "Search Analysis by Strong's". If I click that link, it opens a new window that organizes all of the English hits according to the Strong's numbers that are assigned to them. To me, this is a very helpful tool and is useful for a few assignments that I give to my students with Logos. Logos' word study is useful, but not as helpful to me as search analysis (at least for my purposes) because it is not as easy to use (lacking transliterations or keylinks to Strong's numbers) and produces different results which are sometimes incomplete for my purposes.

look down the road 5-10yrs, with the assumption you're on your own and you just bought a new computer ... and Logos the company
has moved on. That's why I'm buying all my resources in L3 format and then upgrading them.

Never used Strongs that much.

But have you looked at the Tutorial video on the Bible Word Study in L4 (see my link to Videos below)? It sounds to me like this will do all you're looking to do, and more, without the restrictions of Strongs (an incomplete and sometimes misleading resource). There are two videos on that speak to the BWS, one by Morris Proctor and one by Logos. Both are quite helpful.

Thanks, Denise. I just went into my prepub page and changed the delivery method to cd rom for the four pre-pub's I have. I agree with your philosophy about keeping L3. Nothing in the future is guaranteed no matter how great the company.
