I see two main areas of frustration expressed in the forums regarding Logos 5--confusion about package upgrades and confusion about features. I’d like to address the confusion about features—something not new to version 5, but certainly continued with it. In short, the confused customer who just purchased Logos version whatever, and is wondering why one or more of the features that persuaded him/her to buy Logos isn’t available after installing the product.
I think the confusion and frustration is a result of web page upon web page declaring and detailing the wonderful features of Logos, without any mention of the fact that a feature may only be available with select packages, or possibly as a separate purchase at an additional cost.
For example, Logos 5 touts several new features which might make the most sophisticated viewer drool all over the keyboard of his/her new computer. There’s the Timeline; Clause Search; Bible Facts; Sermon Starter Guide; Topic Guide; Bible Sense Lexicon; Bibliography; Search Suggestions; and Scripture Memory Tool. And those are just the new features—never mind all the enhanced features. And every new feature listed has a “learn more” button that will take you to a page dedicated to just that feature—a page that will likely increase your already embarrassing drool rate. But nowhere (as far as I can tell) in all those web pages does it give the slightest hint that some of the features are only available with the purchase of select packages, or possibly as a separate additional purchase.
Yes… I know that if you leave the features marketing pages and go to the package comparison pages, then scroll all the way to the bottom, that the careful observer will (might) discover that his/her drooling may have been in vain—that the feature(s) he/she wanted are only available in higher end packages or for an additional fee. But a potential customer should not have to go to a package page and scroll all the way to the bottom--to a features section--to discover this fact.
A simple remedy is to make it plain on the big and beautiful pages that market these features, which ones come with the Logos engine, which ones require minimum package purchases (and what the minimum package is), and which ones may be purchased separately/apart from any specific package, but require an additional fee. Make this clear where the features are marketed AND where they are listed in the packages. I think this would go a long way toward reducing confusion and managing customer expectations.
