Recommendation for the Logos Finance Team

Hi Logos Team and Family of Logos Users,

Like most Logos users I haven't upgraded to Logos 5. I am excited about Logos 5 but hesitant to hit the buy, buy, buy button. I am currently a Logos 4 Portfolio user and to date I have spent a good amount of my college refund checks building my library. Throughout my 4 years at Trinity International University, Logos has helped me get through my assignments. It saved me travel time by giving me the ability to own books that I could only check out or make photo copies of at the school library . I am now a Senior and will be graduating with a degree in Christian Ministries in the Spring of 2013 although I will be technically done by December 2012 because I'll have met the required 126 credit hours to graduate. I am very much looking forward to using Logos on a regular basis after I graduate. My goal is to become an elite users of Logos. I am always impressed by the useful feedback I read throughout the forum from those elite users. After I graduate I want to become an elite contributor to the current and future family of Logos users.

I know that I will be upgrading to Logos 5. When? I have no idea. Looking at the upgrade price tag to go from Logos 4 portfolio to Logos 5 portfolio drives me nuts. For me, it's almost 2k (I'm aware it differs among Logos users). I find myself regularly reviewing what's new to Logos 5 and what'll be new to me. I have to agree that each resource sounds useful for training and studying but like most of you, the upgrade price tag has turned my world upside down. My heart just sinks knowing Logos 5 portfolio is so far from my budget when I already own Logos 4 portfolio. That feeling really stinks and I've read a lot of forums on this topic and can conclude that most of the family of Logos users agree. I commend every users of Logos whether you're an elite user or a novice for trying to be patient and helping heap burning coals on some heads.

I do have a recommendation for the Logos finance team. I have financed many books for my library in the past and I do have a history of paying off those balances months before the last payment. I would love to finance Logos 5 portfolio except that the monthly payment is almost $200 dollars. If the Logos finance team can give the family of Logos users the ability to extend the finance term to 2yrs I believe more Logos users will opt for that the new upgrade to Logos 5 because the payments will become manageable while giving us the opportunity to experience the amazing tools and resources found in Logos 5.

This post may or may not make it too far up the chain at Logos but having several options like crossgrade, new engine release, and extended finance terms can all help alleviate or possibly heap burning coals on some heads.

I think Logos has to some degree regretted retaining the old L4 names for their new L5 packages. It causes people to think that somehow they are losing something if they don't upgrade to the same package and a lot of folks are upset and confused about this. However, the packages continually change so they are given two letter designations (JG for instance), so what one person calls Portfolio and what another one does is not the same thing.

Instead of thinking about keeping your package name, look to see if there is a package that has resources you'd like to add to your library and go for that package, even if it is called 'Bronze' in L5, and if it is one you can afford, buy it. Remember that full L5 functionality only comes with the Silver package and above.

I can relate exactly to this. I also, have an upper limit to monthly payments and $200 is more than my sustained monthly payments can handle. [:)]

I have found out that for certain packages, there is an option of 18 month payment plan. I'm sure Logos bases this on the amount on account. I have upgraded several times during the L4 days, and during some of those upgrades, my monthly payment reduced (so long as I didn't add too much other stuff). Of course, doing so pretty much reset my current plan and added months. All in all, I have been very happy with this, even if it meant adding additional months to my final payoff, as it has reduced my monthly payments.

I would definitely call in to Logos and speak with Customer Service or Accounting. They are very helpful.

Also, you could consider prepaying some of the cost (if possible). That should surely bring the monthly cost down. [:)]

I agree with Mark in that the naming convention of the packages has caused so much confusion. The names are pretty much the same, however, the content has changed dramatically. If you look at, say, L4 Gold and L5 Gold, you will find that they are completely different. I even find myself getting hung up on this name thing, even though I know they are different. It's just an illusion. Perhaps a lesson is learned and next time we will have packages such as Red, Blue, Black, etc.

Like you, I was a Logos 4 Portfolio owner. I saw no real need to upgrade to Logos 5 Portfolio as the only things that truly interested me were the features and databases of L5. I went with the Platinum upgrade because it also gave me the NA28, several new commentaries I didn’t have, added a few volumes to some I did have, and I picked up several titles which were in my wish list. I’m still a Logos 4 Portfolio owner and now I’m a Logos 5 Platinum owner. If the resources in Logos 5 Portfolio would be beneficial to you then I hope you’re able to secure it soon. However, I think all Logos 4 Portfolio owners need to ask themselves why they really want Logos 5 Portfolio – and be honest with themselves. [;)]

I think the issue of names should come as no surprise to Logos study-ers. If you track back 'the name of', it seems to disappear well into Ugarit time. Giving something or someone 'a name' was very significant. A name could exist without even a reality (the gods).

Even today, people jump at the chance of a better job title ... but same job.
The car companies bring back 'names' hoping that consumers think of the memory instead of the reality. 'Fairlane'. Recently everyone groaned with 'Taurus'.

And even after everyone became greedy customers, Bob was still referring to the 'names', without remembering 'which one' and thus more questions on the crossgrade.

I am happy for you Moises, I myself have upgraded from logos 4 porfolio to logos 5 portfolio at a cost of $854.35. I have a few other books also, but I recieved about 850 new books. It seemed like alot of money, but at a dollar a book not bad.

Thanks Matthew! I am very excited about being able to finance the Logos 5 upgrade at a decent monthly payment plan that I could afford. I am currently at 68% of the download. I'm so elated to see Logos 5 on my MacBook Pro. I can't wait to take full advantage of the new tools and resources available to me. I hope that our family of Logos 4 users will soon see the true value of Logos 5 and engage Logos sales and/or finance team so they can upgrade as we have.

Do not understand why this should be so. Chrysler has used the name 300 since 1954, but it is not the same vehicle the sold in 1954. I owned a 1959 Chevy Impala Convertible. GM restored the Impala name a few years back, but it is definitely not the same car. Everywhere around us we can see new models of goods that have retained the same name with different contents. Why, then, should Logos customers be so unique that they cannot understand the same name with different content when a new model is introduced?

I think a lot of the confusion comes from people not really understanding that they are buying essentially a bunch of digital content not directly tied to a particular version of the software used to access that content. Part of this confusion comes with the package names including the application version number (Logos 5 Bronze, etc) which leads to the association that the content that is part of that package belongs to that version number of the software.

This is also why there are a bunch of people thinking they have to upgrade to the same package name. They see having Resource X as being a feature of the Logos N Package J software, not that Resource X is part of a bundle of content called Package J that can be used with Logos N and newer.

Using your car analogy, when you buy a new car, you understand that everything about it is new. Say you had a 2009 Impala and now you are buying a new 2012 Impala. You decided to keep both instead of trading in the old one. You had a tape player in the 2009, but the 2012 only has a CD player. So if you want to go on a road trip and listen to a tape, you'd have to take the old 2009, not the new 2012. So, bring that analogy to Logos. You have L4 Portfolio and have now just purchased L5 Portfolio. If you want to use a resource that came with L4, you must use L4 because that is something that came with the L4 edition, just like that tape player with the 2009 Impala. Doesnt work that way, so the analogy has broken down because with Logos, unlike with cars, you keep all the previous content you've ever bought and bring it with the new stuff.

This is Logos' marketing problem -- because of their messaging they've artificially tied the software version number to the package contents in the minds of the users.

My evidence for this is even the people that come on here and are confused about the packages understand that the content they've purchased separate from the packages is theirs and will work in the new version just as it did in the old. The only content they seem to be confused about is the content that came in a bundle with the software version number as part of the bundle's name.

BTW: I would not purchase a 2009—or 2012—Impala. The automobile represented by the Impala name is a mere shadow of its predecessor. I see your point Jack, and it is a good one. What I see happening is that the Logos package names are seen to related to the level of power as opposed to the level of resources each has. If someone has Logos4 Gold, and upgrades to Logos5 Silver, it is seen as a downgrade even though the Silver5 has many resources that Gold4 does not have. Once one looks beyond the package name, it is seen that they are completely different. Logos is attempting to rectify that thinking by emphasizing the package content.

Hi Matt!

I just saw your post and I was incredibly intrigued with your Portfolio Upgrade price of only $854.35. How did you manage to get your upgrade so inexpensively?? When I check how much it will be for me to upgrade from Logos 4 Portfolio (L4Po) to Logos 5 Portfolio (L5Po) the system tells me my price is a whopping, wallet-breaking, bankruptcy-leaning, very difficult to spend that much and still feel like a good steward of God's money, amount that pushes me over the fiscal cliff even without Mr. Obama's lack of kind and frugal financial planning amount of $2,016.84, and that's with my Academic Discount as a full-time student!

As a missionary-teacher L5Po is greatly desired but I'm in the midst of raising money for my overseas PhD field research. It hurts so much to think about the possibility that if I do not buy now that I will miss the great discount that is currently being offered plus whatever Christmas money Logos will give purchases during the Christmas Season. Also, since I purchased L4Po less than a year ago; in fact I just bought it on 2 January 2012, less than 10 months before Logos 5 was announced. I spent $3823.56 since then, including L4Po and additional books not found in L4Po so the thought of spending another $2,016.84 is rather daunting...that would make almost $6,000 in one year on books and software. I know L5Po is a great set of resources, and I'm not looking to upgrade to L5Po because I have L4Po; I've read enough posts to understand they're different in various ways but, with great sadness and a lump in my heart, the resources I need, both for my research and for future teaching, are in L5Po.

I even looked at Logos 5 Gold and then added the needed books from L5Po but found myself going over budget again, hmm...oh well.

Well, I think I got off point from my initial query to you Matt, sorry. So back to my original query, how did you you get L5Po at such a low price (relatively speaking of course)?

PS I also had to replace my car in the past week as it needed $1,800 worth of work to pass state inspection but the car was only worth $2,500 so it was not wise to sink good money into that car so I had to get another one. Oh, when it rains it "seems" to pour, eh? But God is always on the throne even amidst the downpour. I'm praying I win the "Win Logos 5 and a Windows Surface Tablet!" contest!
