SATA III Solid State Disk (SSD) is on my shopping list this holiday season for Logos use.
Personally Thankful for Logos 5 full screen on OS X 10.8.2

I went the same route last week. I have an early 2009 MBP, and it was so dog slow that I had trouble actually using anything on it. Trying to use Logos was a major exercise in the 4th fruit.
I also upgraded the ram, because I found the OS* was using 3 of the 4GB, and the browser would frequently use the rest.
L5 ran better on the old setup. After the hardware upgrade, it screams now. I think Logos actually runs better on 4 yr old MBP than my < 1 yr old Windows desktop.
For those wondering about upgrading to an SSD, I promise it will be one of your better investments in Logos (you may want to even consider getting a smaller drive just for Logos).

My MBP is also a early 2009 17". L4 performance has always been acceptable, if not great, on my notebook. I considered installing an 480 GB SSD about 14 months months ago, but the $1000 price tag was way too exepnsive for me. But now, a 512 GB is selling for less than $400, so I went for it.
Since Apple is not making 17" MBP's anymore, I will be very pleased to hold on to this won for at least another two years or so - it feels like a brand new computer.

I am sure I can find this info if I search long enough, but how does one move their Logos Library to a SSD?

It's easiest if you simply do a replacement. Get a compatible SSD and make sure you can hook it up via USB. Then use a copy program like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! to do a drive copy. After that you can drop in your SSD and boot. Logos just works. I think the only thing you lose is your Keychain, so there might be a couple of housekeeping things you need to take care of (like relogging in to dropbox if you have that installed).

I used SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of my internal hard drive onto an external drive. After replacing my intenal with a SSD, I booted up from my external drive (via the FW-800, but you can also use the slower USB port) and cloned the SSD from the external.
No settings were lost, didn't have to reindex, etc - everything was the same as it was on my former internal drive - except it is running many times faster!!!
Note: it took me 90 minutes to make an external clone of my 500 GB (50% free) internal hard drive, 15 - 20 minutes to replace the internal with a SSD, and a little less than 60 minutes to clone the SSD from the external

I was just thinking about getting a smaller SSD just for Logos. To purchase a SSD the replace my HD is out of the question.

In that case you can move your Logos library over and tell the program where it can find it so that you don't have to download several GB again.
The instructions for moving are similar to "multiple computer installation" that's detailed on the wiki: http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers. Check out Method 2.
I did that once on my Windows machine to move the Logos library from C:\ to
\, and it worked well.

WIth Logos closed and indexer not running, one option is copying the Logos4 folder within Application Support (in your Library) to the SSD. Then rename Logos4 on your hard drive and create a symbolic link from the SSD folder as Logos4 within Application Support. Caveat: to use Logos on Mac, including indexer, the SSD needs to be mounted with Volume name in the symbolic link before launching the application.
Planning to replace a WDC 1 TB with hardware errors in a 27" iMac with SSD for Logos use. Thankful can boot 27" iMac using an external USB drive.
