See what collections a resource belongs to?

This may have been addressed, but I wasn't able to discover it in a forum search, and I couldn't figure it out in the software. Is there a way to tell, in the library, say, what collections a resource belongs to? I have just upgraded to Logos 5, which added several new resources, and I'm finding it hard to keep track of which of my dynamic collections books end up in. It may be that I'm asking the wrong question in that there may be a better way to keep track. But, with lots of resources and complicated collection algorithms I'm worried about things falling through the cracks.

Dudley,

In the Library Tab, right next to the Find box there is a blue link that probably reads: Entire Library.

Click that and you can then select collections and you will only see the library portion that matches that.

Dudley, during beta testing for L5 I asked for a similar function. In L3 there was a report we could run that would show what collections a resource was assigned to. I found it very helpful. Since L4 we have not had a way to do this. While you can use Library now to see your collections, you still have no way of looking at a single resource and determining which collection or collections it is a part of.

I would like to see a 'Collections' field added to Library to enable us to see this. However some felt that would be a lot of computer effort because collections are dynamic now rather than static. They may be right, but this is a computer and it runs at gigacycles per second, so somehow I think it could be done without making the computer unusable in the process.

First, thanks to Mark, TC and Dave for your responses. I agree that Mark's suggestion would be very helpful. Since searches and so many other things make use of the dynamic collections content, I agree that it seems odd that there would be a computer resources problem with this. Indeed, the capability of filtering the library by collection that TCBlack mentions seems to suggest that a similar code logic is already implemented. Maybe Logos will reconsider, or maybe I'm wrong. Meanwhile, does anyone have workaround suggestions? I've got solid collections algorithms, but as I said in my original post, I'm a little worried about resources falling through the cracks.

I would suggest, "Tagging all your Resources" as one work around solution. I resisted tagging for a long time (since L4 introduces the exciting Dynamic Collections), until few months back, when I decided to start the painful process of Tagging my books systematically.

You can have "multiple tags" for a particular Resources, if you think it should be part of a number of "a few different collections". So in a way each tag belongs to one Collection - hopefully, this addresses your requirement.
The really painful part is the decision to start tagging when you have accumulated about 7000 Resources over 10 years :-(
After that it is not so bad; whenever you purchase new resources than you tag them as you purchase :-)
The last few days, I have been tagging new Resources from the Upgrade exercise with 600+ resources, still not done yet :-(

The benefits are:

you really get to review the Resources that you purchased (Many of us (?) do not know all our Resources, as we (?) purchased in bundle(s) for economic reasons)
your solid collections algorithms will run into trouble, when it comes across occasional metadata imperfections, including unannounced changes (for good reasons). Few months back I decided to bite the bullet and started tagging. (I think it is a worthwhile effort)

PS: By the way you can preserve your collection, and do not have to tag from ground zero:

using the Bibliography function, to in turn create a new collection, or
in the Library, use your existing Collection as filter, than you can tag each collection at one go, a big time saver to convert your dynamic collections into tag-based collection.

One of the new features being considered for Logos5.1 or 5.2 is an export function to Libronix. Logos5 users can then more easily enjoy their software. (Just joking, as always; ok ... not really joking).

I use the tagging mentioned above. When new resources come in, I simply click on the My-Tags column and they're found in the no-tags 'folder'. Very convenient; and no rush in finding them a spot in my library. I don't think the dynamic collection rules ever worked well since you had to out-guess Logos.

Additionally it's easy to assign a tag to hundreds of books at the same time. I tagged my 3000 book library in about an hour. Been comfy ever since.

I am retired from business, lay believer, trying to catch up with my studies of the Word ... So, I do not know many of my 7000 books yet.

For titles that are obvious that is a piece of cake [:)] but, the not so obvious I normally would have to do:

Open the resource, read the para about the Resource in the information page, identify indexes, Language, etc
if not enough information, I will look at the TOC, eg. if you want to decide between Biography vs Christian History or both
if not enough information, I will then look at the front matters
if not enough information, I will take a look at the contents, eg. so that I get a better chance of categorizing the commentaries more correctly.

So, I just want Dudley to be mentally prepared for a quite involved exercise, which I think is worth while :-)

Are you saying you want to find books that aren't in any collections?

If so, you can create a collection with the rule rating:>=0 and then add all your other collections to the minus field. Any books that remain visible are outside all collections.

Of course, if you have collections like All Bibles, English Bibles, Greek Bibles, you don't need to add the latter two, as all books in them are already excluded by adding the first.

Great suggestions. I've been tagging like mad and have to say it's working pretty easily and will be an improvement over trying to work with inconsistent metadata to make dynamic collections.
