PC Specifications for Running Logos 4 or 5

Out of interest what PC devices are people running for their Logos 4 or 5 set up. I have it running on my 5 year old desktop with a 1.8Ghz dual core pentium / 3GB RAM, and it take s a good 15 seconds to load and then its slow (without anything indexing or downloading in the background).

Trying it on my wife's 2.2 GHz dual core pentium / 4GB RAM is better, but again not great.

So, I am in the market for a new laptop (but cannot afford the MACs). Can anyone share their experiences with their laptops and whether there is much difference going from say an i3 to an i5 to an i7 or AMD A10 over an A8 over an A6.

When not indexing, the biggest bottleneck in Logos is reading from the disk drive, much more so than CPU speed. You can mitigate against this in two ways:

1. Having a faster hard drive (particularly solid state)
2. Having lots of RAM to ensure that files are cached

If I was buying a machine for Logos, I would concentrate on these areas (particularly the first) much more than raw CPU speed. These charts can help with specific HDD models, but it's hard to find out what model would be included in a laptop:

Let me extend my question to screen size fro laptops. One of Logos' key feature are multiple section (panel?) layouts. Having 5 panels on a single screen is really useful. My old 11.6inch laptop juast did not have the size. The 19 inch desktop was great. But, what are people's experiences: 14 inch, 15.6 inc, 17 inch laptops?

Of course your own eyesight is relevant here. You can increase the font size, but then that reduces the amount of text visible without scrolling.

I have similar situation. I run a Macbook (Mt. LIon) which is okay, but...

I'm in market for a new PC. I know what specs. I'll need but I 'm concerned about brand.

What brand name seems to be best overall 'Quality Wise' in today's market?

I want a new faster machine before I upgrade to L5.

Any advice/

I agree wth Mark, these are the key issues for a good laptop.  Mine is an old dual core that actually runs Logos very well with a 7200 rpm hard drive and a 512 dedicated video card and 4 gig of ram...I have always loved the larger screen real estate and have a 17 inch laptop.  It is very heavy to lug around for long walks and need to take that into consideration.  Hope this helps some.

I have a 15.6" LCD  1366 x 768  and find that to be just OK. 

It has a first generation i5 2.53 GHz with 4 GB RAM on Windows 7. It ran L4 well with the original 640 GB HDD spinning at 5400 RPM. It ran L4 even better after I fitted a 180 GB  SSD (it is almost as fast as my  i7 desktop with HDD).

Logos 4 and 5 are resource intensive applications, which benefit from fast processors (e.g 2nd or 3rd Generation Intel i5 or i7), fast storage (e.g. SATA III Solid State Disk), and graphics with dedicated memory.  The 3rd Generation Intel CPU's include HD 4000 Graphics.

Dell has an Outlet web store.  Refurbished computers have been returned within 14 days and hard drives restored to original software image.  Dell Outlet posts coupon codes on Twitter.

Looking at mobile graphic benchmarks => http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html noticed HD 4000 (3rd Gen Intel Core i) is faster than HD 3000 (2nd Gen Intel Core i)

I've ran L4 and L5 on several different configurations over the past few years:

• AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology 1.8GHz laptop, 4GB DDR2, 500GB 5400K HDD - Molasses slow running L4 with more than 5 windows open.
•  AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology 2.1GHz laptop, 8GB DDR2, 500GB 7200K HDD - Handled about 15 windows without too many problems if internet was turned off in L4 - syncing turned on would cause windows stuttering.

Both these systems had integrated graphics - Radeon 4200 equivalent.

• AMD Phenom™ II Quad-Core Mobile Processors 2.2GHz laptop, 8GB DDR3, 500GB 7200K HDD, dedicated Radeon 6470M graphics card (512MB) - Handled many windows open, but would still have stuttering when a sync was in progress. Response jumped dramatically when I upgraded the HD to a SSD. 
• AMD A8-3820 2.5GHz desktop, 8GB, 500GB 5400K HDD, integrated Radeon HD 6550D - handles  a decent number of windows open, stutters a little bit when syncing in L4 - L5 is smoother during syncing.
• Intel i5 3210M 2.5GHz laptop, 6/16GB DDR3, 256 GB SSD, integrated 4000HD graphics - doesn't break a sweat running L4 or L5.

My observations so far is that L4/L5 seems to perform better with a Hyper-threading chip rather than just throwing more cores at it. AMD does not support Hyper-Threading and all the AMD chips I have thrown at L4/L5 struggle with the program more than I would think. The experience on my i5 laptop has been silky smooth with 6GB (what came stock with the system) and the launch time dropped noticeably when I upgraded to 16GB.

The biggest improvements I could recommend is at least 8GB of RAM and an SSD will make a HUGE difference.
