A real doozey

L4 troubles

What happens is that I can only open L4 (By keeping the Ctrl key pressed) in 'use blank layout mode' but when I go to use the File/Guides/Tools menu I will type in my info and press enter and that is now where I encounter the error msg.

"Logos Bible
Software has encountered a problem and needs to close"
and so it closes the program. Otherwise I can usually open a book in the Library and start linking off the links and then I am fine. So it seems like two issues:
1. Having to use the ctrl key to open L4

2. the File/Guides/Tools menu trip the error msg to go on.

Further notes:

I can’t press on Library or Search menu more than one time or L4 will close with the same msg. I pretty much have to stay away from the main menu bar once I get going.

I am running Win XP SP3 94 GB Hard space and 3GB ram AMD Athlon 64 processor. ATI Radeon xpress 200 Graphics

I don't know if this will help, but have you tried getting rid of your excess temp files?

Other diagnostic questions:

Is 94GB the amount of free space, or total space on your HD? (If it's total, provide total free space)
How much video RAM is on that graphics card?
Do you have any Nokia phone software installed?
Do you have any spyware monitoring software running?
Can you open the home page after Logos4 starts?
Are there any other programs that give you this kind of a problem?

Note that you can set Logos4 to start without the homepage, but I don't know of a way to do it without opening the home page. If you can, look at the bottom left and you'll see "Customize" click there and un-check "Show Home Page at Startup"

5.No, when I press 'Home' on the frame menu either nothing or the error msg comes on and all closes up.

6. No other programs give me this problem.

Did you clean out your temp files? (I use a freeware program called CCleaner for that and other clean-up.)

If so, I'm stumped. You may need to get a hold of tech support for a more detailed analysis of the problems.

You can enable logging (hold CTRL as the program loads, then select 'enable logging' after your next crash look in My Documents\Logos4 Log files (or something like that, I'm doing this from memory). Put the log files you see in a zip file and post them to this forum. You can do that by pressing the "paper-clip" (second from the left, on the line that has the smiley faces).

Yes I did clean out my files earlier and I do us CCCleaner. I did not see anything that said 'enable logging' but I do have an enable logging program on my desktop that logs L4. I see the log file when I runi it but don't know how to put it into a zip file. The paperclip thingy said it wouldn't accept the file type on my desktop..

As for zipping the Log file up.

Open Windows Explorer
navigate to My Documents\Logos Log Files\ folder
find the file Logos4.log
right click on the file. Then a dropdown menu will appear
select Send To->Compressed (zipped) folder. Then follow instruction on the screen.
it should create the file Logos4.zip
then follow the instructions Richard gave you to attach it to a reply here

He hopefully can look at it and tell you something.

I have contacted earlier a tecnician but it is a slow process because it is all done through email and I am at work during the technicians service hour Mon-Fri.

I was just hoping someone on the forum was familiar with the problem and could identify it sooner.

This file doesn't look right (probably the wrong file.

It should be in My Documents\Logos Log files in the file Logos4.log.

It should look something like the one below

Everyone keeps saying to do things under Documents and Settings...my Logos installed as hidden files and I can't see them. I ran a backup of my documents and settings to my external hard disk and I saw logos files being copied.

I run Logos 4 on only 512MB of RAM, and I remember Bob P (Logos CEO) saying that it is a stretch, so I wonder if the 256MB of RAM might be a problem.

The report above under #2 was to a previous question #2 about video RAM. 256MB of video RAM is above the minimum of 128MB of video RAM. In an earlier post, he reports having 3GB of system RAM.

A few people running Windows XP have had extensive crashing problems like this, and have benefited from uninstalling and reinstalling the Microsoft .NET framework; Logos 4 requires the .NET framework 3.5; it should have been installed with Logos if you didn't have it already, but some people have had issues with it not installing properly...

I don't think it is included in SP3. Most likely, it should have been automatically installed when you installed Logos4, but some people who have had trouble getting anything to work properly found that manually fixing the .NET3.5 install fixed all their problems. I believe you'd do this by going to the control panel for Add or Remove Programs, find .NET 3.5 and see what options you have; ie Change/Reinstall/Uninstall... Worst case scenario is you uninstall it and then download it from microsoft here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en

Btw I'm not saying this is definitely your problem, just that if you try this that's one more thing you can rule out [:)]

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 with an option to change/remove

Hotfix for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (KB958484) with an option to remove

Where should I go from here? Run the fixes? Delete all and reinstall from your link?

One final suggestion before doing all this - ran Windows Update and make sure there are no more updates for .NET 3.5, if there are, install those first and see if that fixes the problem.

This is the install for the framework itself, the others are just patches. Click on Change and if it has an option to reinstall then run that; otherwise uninstall and reinstall afresh. Ignore the updates for now; once you've reinstalled .NET3.5 they will be installed again by Windows Update.

Well I ended up uninstalling 3.5 then went to your latest link downloaded and installed. Ran Windows updater downloade what it would let me and I ended up with the exact same KB files as I litsed earlier. It did attempt to download and install KB953297 but for some reason couldn't. Anyhow I rebooted and then fired up L4 and lo and behold!!!...same thing, same error msg .

What about my earlier question regarding perhaps an incompatible (to L4) keyboard or mouse?

OK! Finally got a note from one of the tech support people who sent me this below. I followed the link and dissed the handwriting recognition option and it did the trick. L4 is working at full steam. Now I will just wait for .NET4 upgrade.
