is l4 on its way out? just tell us truthfully!
L4 will continue to be supported for awhile. Logos has stated it will continue to provide updates to Logos 4.
It will most likely go the way of L3, and eventually not be supported, but still functional. This is the general path all software companies follow.
Rev 21 : 1
I guess it will be gone by then.
Seriously - the only computers that ran L4 and won't run L5 are those running XP or an old version of MacOX (I can't remember which).
XP machines are not likely to be about after a few years - replacement will be much cheaper than repair and new software is unlikely to cater for XP.
In the new year there will be a free upgrade to L5 those that persist in running L4 will be a shrinking cohort cut off from support from most other users who will be unfamiliar with L4 restricted facilities.
If L4 runs now it will continue to run but honestly it is on its way out to all intents and purposes.
But not really because of anything Logos the company is doing.
I personally can't see why we can't update to 5 and just keep what we have without adding programs we don't want or need until later when maybe it could be afforded!
Chuck
Everything becomes obsolete at some point. The real question is, 'when'.
All the tidbits I've seen indicate that L4 will continue to be supported and updated for the time being. Unlike what someone else said above, I don't think L4 will be like L3. L3 and L4 were very different vehicles. L4 and L5 are very similar vehicles. Many of the updates to L5 will also fit L4, or at least be easily modified to fit. I think we'll see active support for L4 for a longer period of time than we did L3.
But by the time there's an L6 or L7, then I don't think L4 will be supported. But that doesn't mean it won't still work (assuming you maintain hardware that is compatible with it).

Sorry, don't understand. Which "programs" are you referring to?
You will be able to upgrade to for free when the free upgrade becomes available in Q1 2013. This will provide the new L5 engine and UI but not the new datasets and resources included in the base packages and crossgrade options.
Graham
You can...Logos has stated that once the launch period is over for L5 they will release the free engine for L5 for download. So you can just keep your books.
But that doesn't mean it won't still work (assuming you maintain hardware that is compatible with it).
There is the BIG question: " How long will one be able to run L4 on still existing computers? IOW, when all Windows 7 and 8 computers "die" , will L4 die? At that point will L4 die?
when all Windows 7 and 8 computers "die" , will L4 die?
It follows by necessity, I think.
But this isn't a Logos feature (or flaw). There's a LOT of other software that will be in the same boat. Designed obsolescence isn't going away until we get to heaven.
This post has me thinking on when I once had some old DOS programs on 5-1/4" Floppies. The programs worked, so long as I had the hardware to run them, however, as time went on, 5-1/4" Floppy drives became non existent and the systems progressed so much that the programs would no longer run (even though they were moved to the harddrive). Although L4 uses a fairly new platform (the cloud), I think it will become obsolete by way of the hardware and operating system used to run it. [:)]
Sorry I've been away from the computer for several hours. Erwin and Doc B's posts confirmed my thinking. So if I don't upgrade at some point, my books will be usuable. Say in 15 years?
Shawn,
I just purchased the minimal crossgrade for a little over a hundred dollars. I got a lot with it IMHO, ie. data sets plus the resources needed. I see it as an investment to keep my Logos library going over the longhaul. I figure that every three years or so Logos will have an update and I need to invest a little to keep it going. But I got something for my money and was not throwing it away by any means. This is my situation and your's may be very different. Just wanted to share that. God bless.
Further question:
" If I download the free engine upgrade each time it is offered, will I continue to be able use my books indefinitely? "
L4 will eventually become obselete but it will still be a functioning reality as L3 is on some of the people's computers and they are content with it. Some are still using Libronix. It is a just a matter of preference. Some of the programs that were designed for Microsoft 95 will not work now on Microsoft XP, windows 7 or 8 running computers. So remember, L4 will function as long as you have a computer that will support L4. Unfortunately computers die and you have to upgrade and with it the software. But you can get the free L5 engine which will be available in the 1st Quarter of 2013. You have got nothing to lose by upgrading to L5 free engine at that time to keep your software functioning and kinda current in the years to come. For that I am thankful to the LORD.

Hebrews 13:5
Yes indefinitely if you continue to live here indefinitely here on earth (and you know how that is going to end... Ecclesiastes 3:2; Job 14:5; Psalm 139:16; Acts 17:26). On a temporal level, as long as Logos is in business and keeps its software upto date with the concurrent software platforms, you should be able to use your books with the upgraded free engines in the years to come without any problems.

That's good news!
I totally agree, this is outrageous that I have to purchase all of my content again just for an improved piece of software! We should get v. 5 automatically, and only be charged for new content.
Someone in the organization needs to address this, I for one am very unhappy with this approach of making me 'upgrade.' It's like amazon making me purchase new kindle software (free, btw) in order to read the books I bought previously.[:@]
And if the above posts are correct about us being able to get the new functionality for free, at the very least, someone in PR needs to make this more obvious to existing customers.
When you purchase a L5 base package, you pay for new content + whatever dataset(s) included in the package. Logos never charges you for resources that you already own. See the Logos 5 FAQ.
Logos will offer a basic L5 engine for free sometime in 1Q 2013. This free engine will not have all the new functionality. If you want all the new stuff in L5, consider the Minimum Crossgrade.

I was about to respond, but David replied exactly as I was. To echo David's reply, you don't have to re-buy your books and the free engine upgrade will be available.
About 6 or 7 months ago, I began with Logos by downloading their L4 program (which came with some resources) for free, and taking advantage of the free books. I was never under any obligation to buy any package or even buy any other resources. I outgrew what the free software was offering and wanted more. [:)]
I don't know if anyone is doing their masters in marketing. This rollout is just fabulously interesting. It's just not often you can document something like this, etc.
Obviously I'm not in northern Washington trying to ship coal, but I get the feeling there's literally two marketing messages going out, maybe three. And it's actually intensional. People are SUPPOSED to made angry as part of the message 'pump' / multiplier. It's just brilliant.
It's just brilliant.
It's hard for me to know exactly what you mean, so I'll answer a couple of different questions that may be related.
Will Logos 4 keep working as it currently does? Yes. There is nothing stopping you creating a virtual machine (on the OS of your choice) that emulates Windows XP and Logos 4. If you're happy with Logos 4 as it currently is, you can keep using it forever.
Will Logos 4 keep receiving free updates from Logos? No. Logos 4.6a has been released, and Logos 4.6b will be coming soon. After that, there may be future updates, or there may not. Eventually, there will be no more Logos 4.x updates and the upgrade path will be Logos 5. This will be available for free beginning next year.
It's possible that Logos 5 doesn't run on your operating system. If so, you will need to make a choice about keeping your current OS, or upgrading to one that supports Logos 5. This has happened in the past: Windows 3.1 users had to upgrade to switch from LLS 2.x to LDLS 1.0; Windows 95 users had to upgrade to switch from LDLS to Logos 4. Eventually, Windows 8 users will have to upgrade to ? to run Logos ?. (I can't predict the future, so I've just left question marks instead of actual version numbers.)
The only significant difference is that a much larger percentage of the world hardware (especially outside north america) remains on Windows XP (many having intentionally downgraded from Vista) than ever before stayed with an older OS and many will be even more reluctant to upgrade to Windows 8.
