Question about very old Logos product . . .

Hello all,

I have a friend who - a long time ago - bought the Nelson's Electronic Bible Reference Library - Deluxe Edition - for the Logos Library System - and it originally ran on DOS 3.3, Windows 3.1, or Windows 95.

Through the years they have been been using this product (and they like it) but with each new upgrade of Windows, they have more and more trouble getting it to run.

I have no idea whether they ever registered the product with Logos - probably not.

I told them they should call and talk with someone at Logos to see what they can do for them.

And that brings me to my question:

Do you think they would be eligible for an upgrade to the free Logos 4 or 5 engine?
And if so, how would they get all of their books into Logos 4 or 5?

Yes, the free Logos 4 engine is available to anyone whether they've ever owned a Logos product before or not, so it isn't a question of eligibility, but rather will they be able to get access to their old resources in Logos 4 or later? I think the news is good on that front, but they'll have to have (temporary) access to a computer that still runs a 32-bit version of Windows, since LLS 2.0 won't run on 64-bit Windows.

However, if they still have the CD with a serial number, they can probably call Logos to have it activated with a new version of the Logos engine.

The free Logos 4 engine is available to anyone - it can be downloaded from http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/Installer/Logos4Setup.exe

The free Logos 5 engine will be available to anyone sometime in Q1 2013.

And if so, how would they get all of their books into Logos 4 or 5?

the free engine is free - thus there's "to be eligible" for it. Just downloading the free L4 installer http://www.logos.com/support/logos4/install

If the Nelson's Bible Reference Library is in L3 format, running the command "Scan DVD" should be sufficient (or calling Logos Customer support) - if not, a temporary installation of L3 may be necessary.

There will be a free L5 engine in early 2013, but to really use the full features of L5, a Mimimal Crossgrade should be considered.

This sounds like the original CD was in Logos 2.0 format so it would not have a serial number and activation code and an associated account name as later versions did with Libronix 3.0. It would likely have just a three part 12 digit installation code for the specific CD resource set. This means your starting point is a set of resource licenses which are not associated with an account and the license information is not registered with Logos: registering licenses to an account ID and having the ability to upload the license/account information to the "cloud" started with Libronix 3 (but it was not mandatory to upload this in Libronix 3.0, you could retain the option of keeping everything locally: with Logos 2 keeping everything locally was the only option available)

From Logos 2.0 straight to Logos 4 is not an easy route and would need you to work with Logos customer support (which may be easy if you are in North America but a lot more difficult if you live elsewhere in the world, due to the time it might take over the phone, plus any time zone shifts that would be involved). Best route would be to install the CD(s) on a Win XP system, verify they are operational and then install the Libronix 3.0 engine on the same system as this would pick up the installed Logos 2.0 licences and allow them to be registered and an account set up with them and uploaded to a Logos server. Going that route would make it easier to then install Logos 4 or 5 engines on a newer computer, type in the newly established user ID and password and have the new engine download updated copies of these older resources. The book resource files have themselves been updated since this CD was published and now have a lot more functionality built in, nevertheless the new software engine and updated resource files for use on a new computer are free. There is a lot more you can do with Logos these days, but you do not HAVE to. There are also several additional resources that could be downloaded and added to the library at zero cost, so there is quite an incentive to actually move to Logos 4 (now) and eventually Logos 5.

Your friend needs to call logos HQ, installaing the engine of L4 will not be their problem. Once they install it and attempt to run it they will see..........
