Picky, picky, picky ... lectionary miscoding

Luke 1:68-79 is NOT the Gospel - it is a canticle serving as a Responsorial Psalm (or Psalm for short).

The Gospel is what is known in some denominations as a Lesson. The canticle is not a Lesson - it is a response, frequently sung, to a Lesson.

It also appears from the CCT website that the terminology "second lesson" is used rather than "New Testament". Since I don't have the source document from the CCT - only denominational RCL documents, I may be wrong on this.

Yes! I completely agree. As an Anglican Clergyman here in the UK we have Luke 1.68-79 registered as a Psalm/Canticle - it is of course traditionally known as the Benedictus. The Gospel for the day (for the Principle/Main service) is Luke 3.1-6.

I wrote about this on my "ignore..." thread, thinking that I was looking at the Catholic Lectionary. I raised this issue in September 2008 with Phil Gons. There is no reading type for "Canticle" - it would not be hard to provide one.

I am slowly adding the canticle names to the topics.logo wiki along with other named passages such as Bread of Life discourse.

On the lectionary issue I found that the CCT publication does not label them, allowing the denominations to continue their historical conventions. But in the CCT discussions there is the implication that they refer to them as Old Testament reading, psalm, second reading, Gospel

So, along the lines of "woudn't be hard to add the canticle..." wouldn't it also be easy enough to make a bible reading plan out of the RCL? Yes, I'm lazy

My plan is:

Get the lectionaries working correctly
Add prayer books that use the same dates (Liturgy of the Hours, Morning & Evening Prayer}
Add prayer books that have a four week cycle.
Add Greek four week Bible reading plan

This means for Logos:

get lectionaries and all the prayer books that work in the same way to work [RCL, Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox ... etc.)
get partial lectionaries, short schedule prayer books and repeating reading program (above plus Mennonite, Anabaptist ...)

I have used WORDsearch where the Lectionary quotes First lesson, Psalm, Second lesson, Gospel - much better.

Actually, to quite honest, I prefer the latest version of WORDsearch (v 8). It is much quicker and friendlier than Logos 4, and I think I shall use it far more then Logos 4 ! ! ! ! !

Logos 4 does provide the readings when it is working correctly i.e. it was patched but the bug has come back. Having never used WORDSearch, I don't know how they handle lectionaries but I am convinced that Logos has moved in the right direction with their new resource structure. On my machine Logos' speed is not a problem except for error reports. However, I suspect that if my machine was slightly older I might not be saying that. As for "friendly" - as an analyst, this was one think I never figured out how to measure in advance. We need to wait and see how users feel about it when all the features are present and people have used it for a few months.

Thanks for catching this. We fixed a number of mis-labeled things in creating the 4.0 resource, but obviously some errors slipped through the cracks.

As mentioned, the particular difficulty with the RCL is that the titles used can vary across different traditions, but I think these titles should work (substituting "First Reading" for "Old Testament" when Acts is read in the Easter Season).

I agree that is a reasonable solution that minimizes misunderstandings.
