PBB: Synonyms of the New Testament

Since it's public domain, I went ahead and created a PBB for Synonyms of the New Testament that can be loaded as a lexicon. Thus, you can use Bible Word Study and right-click a word to get to it. It appears almost identical to the existing Logos resource, with a few exceptions. I didn't bother going through and putting page numbers. I haven't finished putting in all the footnotes.

There are a few words that appear more than once in the book. These are αἰδώς, λόγος (three times), πραότης (indexed as πραΰτης), and σαρκικός. BWS only links to the first instance.

Some of the forms are listed as passives, but the headword needed to be put into active form. These are: ἅπτομαι, λυπέομαι, and φαίνομαι.

Impressive work, but generally we have viewed it as bad form to use these newsgroups to compete directly with Logos offerings. (http://www.logos.com/product/6553/synonyms-of-the-new-testament). I get the impression that we Logos fans have more of an issue with it than Logos itself however...

Since I have the "official" version already, I will not personally compile it. I was impressed by the extensive linking you did. You obviously spent time on this. I would try to have as many links be by TYPE reference instead of specific resource. It looked like the Philo, for example, was to a specific edition, and there are at least 2 Logos editions out there (English and Greek).

Frankly I'm in a quandary about this one! I remember very well (must be a couple of years ago or going on that) suggesting to Kenneth that one book he was sharing might be "bad form" because Logos published it. I think I remember Ken withdrawing the book.

The Logos Synonyms - published by Logos is probably owned by 95% or more of Logos Bible Software users. It's in just about every collection.

This new one by Elnwood (Wow, Elnwood! The work you did is magnificent! -- Well Done! and Thanks for being willing to share!) is actually an improvement over what we have purchased from Logos. It will do things that the Logos version will not do.

I own Logos 5 Portfolio and I think that perhaps my conscience might not be offended to compile this and use it occasionally "in parallel" with my purchase from Logos.

I have downloaded it and will intensely meditate on what would be right and proper for me. I started this post with the word "frankly."

Well, frankly "Synonyms" is absolutely NOT a book I use that often. So, for me, that makes it a bit more academic.

Would I EVER(!) LOVE TO HEAR from Logos re. this one! *smile*

Which guideline would that be? To the best of my knowledge Logos has never removed a PB file like this one unless the creator himself requested it. In fact, I remember an occasion when someone flooded the forums with PB files of books Logos already sold, and KS4J reported them all. Later he came back and apologized, saying he was wrong to have reported them. I can only interpret that to mean that Logos had told him they didn't care.

As far as I can see, those files are still there, as are many other 'competing' files. But all links to the L5 engine have been removed pretty instantly. That should tell you something. A delicate conscience is a good thing, but don't use it to condemn others for 'violations' that Logos themselves don't seem to have a problem with. The only thing I know Logos to have said is that when they open a PB store we won't be allowed to use it to compete with them.

While the Logos resource shows that it is indexed by Greek, if you try and search it you will not find a field for headword, or lemma, only surface text. Lastly they have it classified as a monograph that does not allow this resource to show up in the many reports that provide access to lexicons. The solution is for Logos to fix this resources, especially since it was just highlighted by Morris Proctor in the blog so it is more accessible. They should contact the person that made the PBB and ask to use it as a starting point for the reworking of the resources.

The other resource that has great material but is difficult to access from the reports is the Synonyms of the Old Testament, also classified as a monograph with English headwords.

Peace, John! Absolutely a splendid suggestion! I concur and support this! I've slept on this matter overnight and this morning I plan to compile the .docx file! Not just that Elnwood did such a wonderful and remarkable job on this file that will "bless" me ..... but!!!!

But! ... Elnwood's motive! *smile* Yes! He respected and respects the Logos Forums Community and desired to "share" with us instead of keeping this splendid labour to himself!

The only official objection I have seen was from Bob Pritchett. In any future PBB store, he does not want user-created resources offered in direct competition with existing Logos produced resources. Thus, it does not appear that this post and offering do violence to published guidelines.

I think Bob's description of a future PBB store is great news as it will be more fully integrated including storing books on a cloud system so we don't have to personally backup anymore.

That was my understanding, too. I've created and posted at least one PB file that Logos sells, knowing that my files are of an inferior quality and there is still additional value in Logos' version.
