I've been having a lot of problems with my eyes lately (something I've never had problems with before)... to the point where I haven't been able to keep up on the forums, and more importantly: I haven't been able to keep up on my biblical studies. This led me to seek out apps to help me see easier, but I want to broaden this topic.... so, I'm curious... What ancillary apps do you use on a regular basis to help you in your studies?
The one that's helped me most recently on the PC is "Pangolin Screen Brightness". I've tried a number of utilities here, but this one is simplest. It gives a simple menu of percentages and dims the screen by the percentage selected... thus reducing contrast. There are a number of these out there. One I tried that was very flexible allowed any arbitrary percentage to be entered for screen brightness and any color to be used to tint the screen, but in the end, it wasn't as easy to use as the Pangolin Screen Brightness utility.
I also use the Microsoft Office apps a good bit, Word & Excel. I'm very familiar with them and their programming languages and, for some odd reason, Logos likes the Word format for PBBs.
For collaboration, though, I prefer Google Docs. I don't have a lot of experience here, but from my limited experience, this is the best way to collaborate on notes. The version tracking isn't very powerful, but I haven't found anything better yet. There may be better options here. I would love other opinions.
I've also recently started using Evernote for creating notes that can be accessed from any Computer or remotely from any tablet, phone. This app has improved greatly since I last tried it a year or so ago. It seems to be the top of the class as far as making notes available anytime, anywhere.
The last category that I can think of offhand is: general text editor. I used to use a paid app called TextPad, which is an awesome app that I used for years (next to EMACS, the penultimate editor). I now use Notepad++. It's a great freeware editor that has most of the features I rely on, though I find it less useful than I used to. Where Logos is concerned, the main use I had was stripping the formatting, there are better ways to do that now.
So, what tools do you use in support of Logos and general research?
