What are [8 highlights] in Bible Knowledge Commentary in Logos 5?

Logos 5: While reading the Bible Knowledge Commentary (2 Cor. 5) I noticed several [8 (or some other number) highlights] in the text. What are these [highlights]? They are in a light blue color and they do not respond when clicked on. Assuming they are accessible, how are they accessible?

These are new features introduced in Logos 5.0a and show "community highlights" - so where other Logos users have highlighted the resource.

They can be enabled / disabled vis the "Popular Highlight" flag in the visual filter dropdown.

They are not available in Bibles.

Welcome to the forums, George!

These highlights are "popular" or community highlights, the feature works like in Amazon's Kindle: 8 other users highlighted the passage you are looking at.

They do not respond as there is no further action possible - so you won't be told who highlighted the passage and with which highlights.

If they disturb you, you may turn off the display in the Visual Filters menu (the three-colored dot)

Yes, as in (I think) all VFs: right click on the Visual Filter in the VF menu and you'll get the second level menu item "disable in all resources". Voilá.

Yes there is.

It seems that there is a monkey see monkey do effect (i.e. - 6 highlights on a greek word with English translation - on a commentary which makes good use of greek). Where I've seen those highlights it seems to be just those part... The surrounding context gets nothing, unless it needs to get a certain amount of highlights which would then make more sense. T

What's even more obnoxious is that if you copy it as-is, say into BibleWorks, it includes that note about others' highlighting!

David - I'm not sure I fully followed you… but I think so. [:)]

The popular highlights are dynamic in a sense… if a resource is very popular and has many highlights, the threshold will be higher. In lesser highlighted resources, the threshold is lower. The areas that you see highlighted are so because enough others have highlighted there to cross the threshold. It is my understanding that the system is smart enough to combine similar highlights… consider the following:

The Cat in the Hat knows a lot about that.

If the threshold is 5 highlights, if three people have highlighted the entire sentence, and two have highlighted just "The Cat in the Hat," the community highlighting would reflect highlighting just for the first part of the sentence. Presumably, if two more people highlighted the entire sentence, it would be reflected in the community highlights. In a commentary with Greek & English translation, it is likely that there are many highlights, but most of them are gathered around the word and its translation. That may not reflect your behavior at all, but it apparently does reflect others behavior.

As for "monkey see, monkey do" … community highlights are so new that I can't imagine that there are many monkees seeing any others just yet. [;)]

Personally, I like the highlights, but I think the "popularity" should appear in popups only, rather than after the text (which is hyper disruptive to reading)
