Black boxes in the UI

Hi,

I've just upgraded to Logos 5 and I'm having problems with parts of the UI turning black. I have attached a particularly all-encompassing example, where only the scroll bar and 'updating' animated icon are visible. I can usually recover the window by clicking on the title bar.

Any ideas?

Is this on Vista / Win7 / Win8 ?

Have you restarted your computer since you installed Logos5 (this may, or may not help - even on a Mac).

Another option to try is to enter the command set custom chrome to no in the command bar (not sure if that one works on Mac).

Your graphic is really graphic, John! *smile* But, of course, not at all funny to you! I'm sure other volunteers who know the technical side of Logos will appear in this thread very soon. The only time I've been bothered by that kind of blackness is when I've way too many windows open in my layouts and any operation strains Logos 5 to the breaking point. Then it's usually temporary. You may be asked to supply a log; and also you may be asked how much ram you have in what kind of a computer. Also, there are those who also know about hard drive speed and graphics cards and all that kind of stuff.

Sorry should have included that info first time round! The laptop is NP700Z5A-S0 Samsung Series 7. It's Win7 64-bit on an Intel Core i7 (2.2 Ghz), with 8GB RAM and lots of HDD space. the graphics are switchable between AMD and Intel (but the problems occur whether I am in power saving or performance mode). I have restarted the computer and made sure Windows was up to date.

Did you try the set custom chrome to no command? (This reduces the demand on the video subsystem.)

This is a graphic display issue, so you could try switching to whichever graphics emulator (AMD/Intel) you aren't using. Typically you'd want to use the dedicated, rather than the shared video RAM, but play around and see if switching helps. If there are video accelerators at work, you may want to tweak some of those settings too. Logos has highly intensive video demands, so don't hold back on giving her all she's got (say that last bit with a thick Scottish brogue).

Also, if you have any 3rd party graphic UI helpers (e.g., Stardock's Window Blinds), disable it/them and see if that helps.

Be Careful with graphic driver updates!

Graphic cards made with AMD or Intel graphic chips are not necessarily made by AMD or Intel! In that case updating drivers directly from those sites may work, or may really mess things up! I know because it happened to me (with an nVidia card made by eVGA). In fact, updating to the wrong driver may cause problems like the one you're experiencing.

If your (graphics card/built in video subsystem) came with your computer, only update drivers from your computer manufacturer's website, or in conformity to their specifications.

If you bought your graphics card yourself, only update drivers from the specific manufacturer of your specific card.

Richard, that's good advice. I have downloaded the latest drivers from Samsung which seem to be a bit better. Because it's an intermittent fault I will watch it for a couple of days and let you know how I get on.

Be Careful with graphic driver updates!

Concur with caution, also aware of a vendor that lags behind in posting updated graphic drivers to their support site so am using ones downloaded from manufacturer web sites in a Windows 7 laptop. Caveat: also have rolled back a graphic update or two; at other times, have installed beta graphic drivers.

Thanks for your help. Graphics driver update seems to have done the trick (even though the Samsung drivers are woefully out of date).

One day I might try out the Leshcat drivers, which are meant to be bang up to date (but their site is down for maintenance as I write):
