Call for Forum Moderators

Bob, Logos, the amount of name calling and junk (have other words for junk, but it seems to be all encompassing) on these forums really gets in the way of the help and knowledge that could be given. I also think it gives logos and Christians a black eye.

Many forums have moderators that have delete power, can edit posts, and can end threads when they get out of hand or the question has been answered, or a flame war has erupted.

I think you should select 3 or 4 moderators per forum (general, logos 4, logos 3,...), they can overlap, and give them power to make the members be civil. Of course Logos has the ultimate say, but some godly, level headed, long term thick skinned men and women could really improve the forums.

And before I get accused - I do not qualify - I am not long term, I come and go, I am not always level headed on these forums (working hard on that), I do not and would not do the job. Thomas Black comes to mind as a great candidate.

They would be volunteers, and all it would take to clean things up is a few posts deleted, or a person or 2 banned for a week or 4 from participating.

If people want flame wars and to be rude and harsh, have them do it elsewhere.

Michael, I certainly agree with the sentiment and would applaud this move. But Logos should not make it without establishing some clear rules of conduct that users should agree to before being able to sign on. How can you be a referee when there are no rules?

This would require some thick skin, as people who make this sort of call to civility are sometimes called names already.

I would include the power to 'freeze' a discussion, in addition to the other powers you describe.

Banning, should probably be left up to Logos. But these moderators could mark posts for review and posters for possible banning.

The problems come, not when people are clearly engaging in less than loving Christian behavior, but when they're engaged in borderline behavior. How far off-topic is too far? Is complaining for it's own sake (without constructive criticism or comments) legitimate? Is 'baiting' allowed, or other passive-aggressive behavior (and how do you define it)?What about trolls? What about theological debates, ethical debates, etc.?

There have been times when posters have crossed the line, IMHO. Sometimes a reprimand brings them back, other times it just motivates more bad behavior. There have even been a couple of times when I suspected a bit of mental illness was at play. How do we respond to that in a loving Christian way?

I'm quite sure Logos doesn't want to look like the bad-guy or the 'thought police' here. So appointing third-party volunteers with some broad powers may be a way to go. But I wouldn't want to be one. I have enough trouble in my life.

In the mean time, we are a self-modified forum. This means everyone is free to express objections to content, etc. And if the report abuse function gets fixed, any of us could do that too.

Great points Richard.I have a 3 year old, a 4 year old, and a 5 month old and "moderating" the behavior of these is VERY DIFFICULT! Adults are not much better sometimes!

From what I've seen, Logos has been unbelievably patient with the forum-flow, and
speaks well for the company. Several times I've wondered whether a comment-series
was wise for Logos, but patience seems to work ... threads eventually play-out.

Periodic anger and even a poor choice of words seems part and parcel of a user
group that cares about a product. Years back MS walked about from Visual Basic,
but used the same name for the new product ... that took years to heal. For Logos,
I suspect we're talking a few months.

I'd vote for continuing the current policy. Even Christians sometimes make a few
mistakes.

This suggestion comes up every so often - usually after some long, meandering thread relating to KJVO, Calvinism v. Arminianism, the partaking of adult beverages on Christian tours, etc.

Let's assume that Logos finally gives in on this and assigns someone to moderate. What happens then? Well, I suspect that all is peachy keen for a while until someone gets censored or is put in the penalty box by the moderator ... hurt feelings, defensive posturing, accusatory finger-pointing, self-righteous indignation, overwrought apologies, and general chest thumping for everyone (all in a very sanctified manner, of course)! And, all of those feelings will naturally squelch the impulse to continue the thread by responding in a snarky manner (insert sardonic smile with a pinch of sarcasm here [;)]).

The point is, even if you capitulate and hire a sheriff, there will always be some bickering and occasional lapses of Christian behavior. Off Topic threads, thread hi-jacking, and general meandering are always to be expected because they are a function of human nature. Besides, the Logos forums are mild compared to many others I have read. One of the longest threads I have ever seen (in another forum) was in response to the question, "Who said, 'Rut-Roh' first - Scooby or Astro?" - and, my, weren't there some nasty comments on such a divisive topic as that!?

Rather than trying to regulate behavior and thought, I like the free hand (but self-regulated) give and take of this forum. I suggest that Logos leave it as is and that if anyone finds themselves offended in any of the discussions, simply do not read, follow, or respond to it.

Probably not in this life. [:)] However, there do exist persons who, for the greater part, are able to resist the urge to REact out of the heat of the moment, "thin skinned" raw emoting. Feelings and emotions, whilst quite real in the moment, are such fickle, fleeting things.

There are always those, a specific type who have especially "blossomed" with keyboards and internet connections in hand, who seem to engender the desire to "rise to the challenge" in response by even the gentlest among us. These have a particular affinity for mastery of the aforementioned passive-aggressive - often, but not always deliberate - button-pushing modalities. Some do it subtly, others more blatantly.

John Newton, Amazing Grace lyricist, wrote a beautiful Biblical reply to a pastor who asked his counsel regarding the necessity of approaching a fellow contemporary with a foundational theological apologetic. It still stands as a thing of beauty and I try to remind myself to give it a thorough re-read periodically, for it is marinated in the purity of Biblical truth with a continual view to Christ-centeredness and doing all for the glory of God, as unto the Lord.

As much as I know better - and I do know better in this marvelous grace in which I stand - I can still, to my shame, choose to deliberately respond inappropriately upon occasion. I generally do so, not off the cuff in reaction, but in a measured, calculating way ... which makes it all the worse.

While I know it doesn't generally work, even amongst a group comprised largely of Christians - perhaps even especially more so where cultural and doctrinal/theological diversities are concerned - I'd like to see it work by members here in the forum reigning themselves in, even if it requires the gentle to firm, as appropriate, nudging of one another. Well, that's the way it would work in an ideal microcosm, but that just ain't the way it works in the real world, even amongst a largely Christian gathering. But it's a nice to think wishfully upon occasion. [:)]

I have to agree with both of these. In my experience moderators are a very bad idea. The moderators virtually always operate at the same maturity level (spiritually, mentally, etc) as everyone else (which is rather low). So what ends up happening is that what gets moderated and reprimanded is not necessarily what's wrong or illogical, but whatever goes against the party/bias that the moderator happens to favor. Then, the moderator claims absolute arbitrary authority so that you can't even question the logic or rightness of the moderator's decision. So if you feel you've been wronged by a moderator, tough luck. Of course, I've seen some forums where they try to compensate for this by allowing you to submit a complaint for review; however, this usually turns out to be "lip service" so to speak because the persons in control feel that if they actually over-rule a decision that it will undercut the authority of the moderators and anarchy will ensue.

Ideally, moderators should be like deacons (insert canned laughter) who are able to handle things in a more logical and spiritual manner and rather than making their decisions the arbitrary absolute end-all, they should be capable of and required to justify their decisions.

Unless such persons can be found, moderators should be left out of the equation. Honestly, these forums aren't that bad. Some people are too sensitive, but we'll never be able to satisfy everyone.

Edit: I just realized that this comment may be read as offensive: "The moderators virtually always operate at the same maturity level (spiritually, mentally, etc) as everyone else (which is rather low)." I hope no one is offended by it, I don't mean to call everyone immature and stupid. Of course, everyone on the *Logos* forums is super mature (spiritually, mentally, etc), it's just that it's in the low-supers rather than high-supers. ; )

I don't think off topic posts or disagreements, "lapses" in Christian behavior, or even comments about about scooby necessarily need to be regulated. I do think personal attacks, name calling, and someone just being mean could be dealt with.

For example, let's say I respond those of you who are saying this is a bad idea with "can't you stupid people just think through this? Don't you ever read you bible? In colintations 1:6 is says let there be moderators!!"

So maybe many of you ignore me, and a few of you try and fix my wayward thinking with some comments. But now we have a horrible example to any new person who is reading through this forum, they see stuff that has no business being said, being said and responded to. A moderator could edit or delete my post, and let me know that it was inappropriate, and maybe mention colintations doesn't exist. And not just new people, but those who pop in and out from time to time as they need help, or who just lurk to fish out all of the good new ideas. I think it becomes a better place for everyone. This of course is my opinion, and as such is worth - $0.02, which can be redeemed the next time you buy me lunch.

I just don't think people moderate themselves very well when we can hide behind the keyboard.

I have come around to the position of thinking moderators would be a bad idea (after once emailing a couple of personal friends within Logos asking them to please lock a forum thread that had gotten out of hand, but being grateful that they ignored my request). Many of the reasons given by others above have helped convince me of that.

I believe in the priesthood of all believers, which includes exercising some pastoral care/oversight in whatever communities we find ourselves in, whether they be physical or virtual. I've had the opportunity to be a healing presence when rifts occurred in another online forum I frequent (not a Christian one) and it was kind of cool to see that one could do that in cyberspace. So I encourage us all to be thinking along those lines whenever some heated discussion gets started: to be forgiving whenever some newbie makes the same mistake that others have made or ask the same simple question that has been answered a dozen times before (how can we expect them to go back and read everything else that has been posted in the past to know that they shouldn't do that?); to be gentle in steering people back towards the main point if necessary; to be longsuffering if someone misunderstands us and thinks we are angry at them when we're not, and to respond with kindness rather than shouting back at them. And in all things, ignore trolls and blathering fools. (Remember Mark Twain's sage advice which is sort of a restatement of Jesus' adage to not throw your pearls before swine: "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes time and annoys the pig." So if someone is being incorrigibly obstreperous, just let it go.)

By the way, have you all seen Bob Pritchett's excellent Business Email Training slideshow? I wish he'd do something as clear and helpful as that for forum posting.

Well, overall I have, for the short time I have been viewing the forums (since diving into L4), I have learned a lot. I have seen many post some inflammatory statements and then later exhibit what would never be on any other forum...a realization of wrong committed or perceived wrong and then apologies were made and relationships restored and strengthened. It was impressive while seeing this happen just yesterday evening and last night. It looks to be well in hand with self-moderation. Sometimes feelings are hurt, but I have seen you folks remedy that situation very quickly. I have never seen it on other software forums.

Certainly there are clearly a few around who are able to communicate with a bit more grace than the rest. Yes some of those who already are offensive will be offended when/if they get the boot for a few days or what ever is done.

My main concern is having a few moderators in case of "spam" postings (remember a few weeks back?). It took too long for Logos staff (I'm sure they have a few other things going on) to go through and delete those and from what I heard if a person ended up following the links on that spam post they were in for a not so pleasent suprise.

I'm not sure this is enough for someone to be a good moderator. A man may obey the laws of society perfectly, but that doesn't necessarily make him a good judge or a good lawyer.

I don't think anyone is concerned about people who are objectively offensive being offended at their being corrected. The concern is whether the moderator can objectively assess that.

It really does come down to (as Russ pointed out) to one's present "spiritual condition."

I know that for myself, I've been involved in (be quiet Thomas, Philip, and Damian!) a few threads that went on longer than they should and it was really due to my stubborn/prideful streak...

Some current threads can be ignored on the basis of the subject line, but many cannot. I doubt it would work perfectly, but I do think it would help and that it shouldn't be too hard to set up.

I would recommend that users be able to mark threads according to how they view their value. then have a star rating that informs people of the overall value score before entering the thread. Of course if you can mark a user as valuable no one will ever read my posts, so I don't recommend that :-)

IMHO, we already have those who bring "moderation" to these threads. They may not actually wear a badge or carry a gun (or have a title), but there are several "elder" types. I am at a loss for words but I think I got my point across. [:S] It is more about just being present and bringing a level headed influence than trying to enforce a rule.

I am glad to see they've started showing what sub-forum each post is in, in parentheses after the subject line. That helps me ignore all the Mac questions that I won't be able to answer anyway.

And I agree that some better organization of the forums would help. There are two few sub-forums. There needs to be one just for bug reports, for example, which people can feel confident will be seen and responded to by a Logos employee(e.g., "fixed in 4.0a," "that's by design; here's why," "thanks; logged in our bug database," "can't reproduce; could you give us more info"). It is frustrating sending in bug reports that get all kinds of "Amens" from the peanut gallery out here but not a peep from anyone official. I realize they've been busy working on the product, and Bob and others have been making their occasional presence known on the forums which is great, but it would really help if there were a separate forum they knew they needed to have someone keep on top of with every single post.

Also "Files" says nothing to me about what that sub-forum is supposed to be about.

I'd suggest an organization with at least this level of granularity:

General Bible Study Questions & Discussions
Logos 4: General banter (kudos, gripes, other comments not requiring reply)
Logos 4: "How To" Questions (help from other forum users primarily; Logos employees as time permits)
Logos 4: Bug Reports (Logos employees will monitor this assiduously and give prompt replies)

overall, I think the Logos community polices fairly well. And they also break the law fairly well.

Sounds a bit like life.

Only in extreme cases of belligerant and unrepentent behavior--then ban them for a while. Otherwise, carry one.

I like Rosie's idea of some more sub forums. That will help, but not alleviate banter and "off-topic" talk because life is not so easily compartmentalized. But at least we'd have a place to say: "take this topic there)

I agree, but for different reasons. I'm also interested in improving organization to make it easier to find threads of immediate interest. The tags have become a huge sea of similar, but different nomenclature. A moderator could conceivably improve that. Also I think it would be good to create additional topics and to combine threads, or at the very least edit the tags so tag searching works better. PLEASE.

I'd suggest an organization with at least this level of granularity:

General Bible Study Questions & Discussions
Logos 4: General banter (kudos, gripes, other comments not requiring reply)
Logos 4: "How To" Questions (help from other forum users primarily; Logos employees as time permits)

Rosie's organization shows some serious thought and a better grasp of the breadth of Logos' products than I had before I read it. I think she's on the right track.

I'd suggest a slight modification. Combining the "other" and "Logos 4: General Banter etc." into a "Logos Community" or some similarly named topic.

The other day someone asked about tithing and someone else was quick to reply that this query was "off topic". I'm guessing they replied that way because it wasn't a direct question about Logos technology. But soon a few people made very practical suggestions as to how Logos could be used to explore the subject so anyone could arrive at their own conclusion. I certainly knew what "I believed" about tithing ;-) but the thread prompted me to explore the suggestions. That ended up giving me some practice at using Logos as well as showing me how quickly I could review and learn something more about a topic I thought I already knew.

Hopefully the reason we all have Logos is to aid our study and understanding of God's word, so, in my opinion, asking each other for help and for ideas in accomplishing that seems appropriate. Any discussion, including ones on technology, can go in a direction that wouldn't be prudent to continue, hence a need for human moderators besides the one of improving organization. So bottom line is that I think a sense of community is helpful even if it isn't always tightly focused on technical and product issues.
