I am reading Calvin's institutes and would like to shorten the time allotted.... will I mess up what I have read?
I am fairly certain it will. The best way to check would be to create a new fake reading plan and see what happens when you shorten things up.

If memory serves, that will reset the plan. However, you can set the start date somewhere in the past and then use the "Catch Up to Here" option in the right-click menu to make everything read that you have completed.
