Are they selected at random
Not at random but yes, you must prioritize.
s it possible to remove the "book of the day" and preferred bible excerpt from home screen?
Simple drag them to the lowest positions and you will see them only if you scroll down to them.
My homepage shows 3 calendar devotionals. Are they selected at random out of the ones I own unless I prioritize? Is it possible to remove the "book of the day" and preferred bible excerpt from home screen? I can't seem to be able to do it even if I don't select any option.
That is not my experience! Unless, as often, I misunderstand...
Thanks for the correction, Mike
MJ and Mike, thank you both for your time and helpful comments!
The instruction in the wiki article http://wiki.logos.com/Devotionals_in_the_Home_page states that "You will need to prioritize at least 3 devotionals as this is the minimum that Logos4 shows on your Home page."
I found that statement to be true, but it doesn't provide the whole picture. What happens to me is that no matter what I do there still seems to be one more devotional in the homepage that I did not prioritize and do not want to show. Did some digging on the forums and found this old post (for logos 4) to be still true now.
Also the following statement from that thread is still true
if you turn off all the checkboxes in your home page, you still get two items showing up: a random excerpt from your preferred Bible, and a random excerpt from a random Book of the Day. Those are impossible to turn off.
Mike, you appear to 'get the award' for the most features to look at!
No matter my attempts, mine can just not let go of the Bible snippets (which never change, so I've pretty much got those 'key' verses in the Bible memorized ... 'Onward Christian Soldiers!!') and the Perseus or manuscript samples (always with the same description).

I know. I complained. Bob said changing it was not high priority.
