Default tabs in Personal Books

I was given a set of notes for a class I'm in that is mostly a collection of outlines written in Word. I have successfully included it as a Personal Book and everything is okay except for the default tabs.

The first level of indentation has a 2 inch tab after the level # and second level indented items have 4 inches after the lettered levels and so on. It makes for an interesting way to read the outline because your eye is jumping all over the screen to take everything in.

Is there a way to control the default tabs for Personal Books?

Note: The author of the outline did not use Word's numbered list feature. Instead, the author created a series of paragraph styles with increasing indents and religiously applied the styles to the material to get the indented look of an outline. What is even worse, the author had to manually type the letter / numbers in for the formatting to flow correctly.

Yes, I know that the right thing to do here is use the auto numbering feature, but it is 200 pages of outlines, so not a trivial thing to do...

I'm not sure I fully understand your post, but the way to change elements within a personal book is by altering them in Word. If I were you, I would duplicate the original .docx to create one that you can play with. Change the various styles and see if you can get it the way you like. You should be able to "apply to all" when you change the styles.

Thanks -- I know that I can rework the original document, but at 200 pages and needing to change practically every line, I thought I would try something else first.

To be clearer on what is happening, in the original Word document, there are many indented paragraphs starting with a. or 1), etc. to make up an outline. Each line at different levels of indent are a different style and it actually looks good in Word.

In word, you see things like this:

1) First line

a. Second line indented

Import his file into a Personal Book and this is what you see:

1) First line

a. Second
line indented.

It is as if the default tabs are set to 2 inches each and I'm wondering if there is a way to get control of them.

But if the correct heading styles are present, you could change word with e.g. find "^t" (this should be the tab character, iirc from top of my head) replace all with " " space. bingo.

When the heading styles aren't present, you won't get a decent TOC in the personal book. But even this works very efficient when you use Word's outline view.
