Oxford Bible Commentary. What did I stumble on?

I went with my wife to one of those consignment shops and she (that's right she) found an old Logos 2.1 CD with the Oxford Bible Commentary on it. And since it works with Logos Bible Software I tried it out. I now have a new commentary on my LBX 3.0!

Now all i want to know is just what did I or should I say she find?

I just never heard of that particular book, and it isn't available at LOGOS. But i am glad I have it. now I just wish it worked in Logos4 but at least it is still visible in Libronix!

That book exists (here it is on Amazon.com). I didn't know it was ever available in an older version of Logos. It isn't available for me in Libronix (L3).

I picked this up only a couple of years ago and it imported almost flawlessly from v3 to v4. The only problem is that it is not recognised as a "commentary" but a "monograph." So, it does not appear in the passage guide reports.

Ah, I see that it is still available from Oxford University Press. I wonder why Logos doesn't sell it anymore?

It would be great if Logos could renew the contract for this - it's a bit of a hole in their "1 Volume Commentaries" selection (together with the New Jerome).

Anyway, many of us have been using this very profitably in v4 with the exception of the inability to use it in Passage Guides.

What is keeping it from being able to be used in Passage Guides? Is that something Logos can fix without the contract being renewed? Is that the case for any old products -- they can't be upgraded to L4 compatibility without a contract renewal? Don't some of them just work seamlessly with no changes on their part? I admit I don't understand the book formats at all, and not knowing this commentary product either, I can't tell why it might not work in the Passage Guide.

This has been raised from about the first week of Beta testing... There has never been a firm response on whether this sort of data can be corrected...

I'm pretty sure that when they negotiate a contract now, they negotiate the right to upgrade it (even if they can't sell it). It weren't always so...

The CD I have is named "The Oxford Bible Overview Guide" it was put on a Logos 2.1 disc. When I got it I just left the disc in and turned on Libronix and let it find it then allowed L3 to move it onto my hard drive. Like you I didn't know it was ever available in any older version of Logos but it does work great in L3 even it even comes up in my Passage Guide!

I just wish i could use it in L4! But I am happy anyway!

You should be able to use it in L4 (Damian said he has it there). It just won't show up in the Passage Guide because it's labeled a monograph.

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having the same issue.

The resource file OXBIBCOM.LSF is a LLS2.X file and never gets converted to a Libronix 3 (.lbxlls). Apparently, LLS3 has no trouble reading LLS2 .LSF files. However, in Logos4 when I scan the resources directory, it does not pick this up.

I tried the steps here

but there was no update for this resource when running the script.

Since Damian has had his resource for a couple years, I am curious if he got an update a while back that converted his resource to a .lbxlls extension.

Logos 4 should read that file. I still have around 50 resources of the old LSF / LIX format that I'm able to use in L4.

It wasn't all that spontaneous. It has been on my personal wishlist for some time. And since it seems like an old product that might not be available forever, I decided to go for it while I still could. Anyway, Logos has a way of bringing out the impulsiveness in a lot of us! :-)

It works!

Everything is now automagically showing up after the latest restart of Logos 4. I added this resource in LBX 3 with licenses sync'd as of very early this morning, and verified it was available in LBX 3. I had been running "scan C:\Program Files\Libronix DLS\Resources" in Logos 4 periodically throughout the day with no luck. Also, have been restarting Logos 4 from time to time.

It has been about 10 hours since I sync'd up the licenses in LBX 3. I'm not sure why running "scan" did not detect it, but it's good to see this working in Logos4 anyway. Thanks for your help everyone!

[:)] Well, I finally found out just how to make full use of this commentary in L4! And it works great!

Go into Tools click Collections
Make a new Collection with that resource (Or any other old 2.1 resource)
Then go into Guides
Click "Make a New Guide Template", make one titled something like "My Passage Guide"
Add that Collection to the template and save it.

then Start using the new My Passage Guide with the book you want to use added to it and it works great for me!!!!! [:)]

But this is easily remedied by adding the media to the media library on your computer. And then creating links to the files in a Note File.

Then when you Ctrl-click on the links they will open in your media player.

Thank you both, Thomas and Paul. Excellent news! I was able to purchase the set I wanted for $52 NZD still in its original wrapping.

I'll try the L3 install and sync option as it's an international call for me to contact Logos. Appreciate your advice. [Y]

Well I was sucessful, although it took most of the day to become so.

I had to delete L3 a few days ago (my laptop couldn't reindex L4 due to insufficient disk space) which I thought shouldnt be an issue now that I have L4. Then of course I purchased the Lucado Lifeworks.

What a headache trying to install it. I installed and uninstalled it 3 times from the supplied disks but it kept giving errors and would not install correctly. Having discovered some articles relating to my errors, I managed to clean the corrupt installs, and reverted to installing my old L3 pastor Library. That failed the first time too. Finally when it installed it asked me for the Lucado media and they're now on my laptop. L4 has managed to find them, so now i just need to make collections, prioritise the devotional book (done), and make a linking document to use the audio...once I work out where they are!

I am disapointed that I can't read them on my iPhone though as it was half the reason I bought this collection...read on the bus, in bed etc. That aside, it was still a good purchase [:)]

From what I have gathered so far, it seems that reading plans won't sync if the book is not yet unlocked for the iPhone (which is the case for the Lucado collection sadly). I had tried adding a book to the mobile favourites list on L4 on my laptop, and while it showed there, that too would not sync to the iPhone. I suspect those books are 'non existent' to my phone.

I've had this title for years. I have not tried to add it since Logos 4.0 came out. I'm surprised it still works. I believe it is a third party product that has never seen an update. It makes me want to try adding the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (same publisher) to my Logos 4.0 dictionaries. Maybe it will work too.

I'm going to start digging through my boxes of old software and see what other ancient Logos version titles I might find.

Many years ago, those were all available at Sam's Club for 19.99 each. I picked up Lucado, Jeremiah, and MacArthur. It was a great find and they do work just fine in L4.

You can of course import the audio files into iTunes (and label them as audiobooks) and then move them to your iPhone.

Many of those books are in audio format on CD 2.

I spent over two hours in three different phone calls last Friday getting this figured out. I was quickly given over to a Level 2 tech, and she got off the phone after she and I thought the problem was solved. Four minutes after hanging up, I realized that was not the case. Another 1-1/2 hour later another Lever 2 tech (Beckie - to be precise) worked on two computer getting the software installed. She had to take control of both computers, while I had to copy files from one to the other, in order to get it to work. If you have problems getting this installed into L4, I would suggest a call to Customer Service. I had to wait 15 minutes for both calls, but once connected they quickly started working on the problem.

One mistake I made at first, was using the old passage guide, I forgot to make sure I went to the new template that I had made. When I did change I was able to see the Collections added to it.

Ah, that was it, Wes. Now I can see a list of relevant (to the passage) selections from the Oxford Bible Commentary, as well as the "usual" passage guide selections (including all my other commentaries) when I enter a verse reference to search for. I ~think~ that the Oxford is still being treated as a monograph, but it ~does~ end up in the search results (which is certainly not bad for backward compatibility). If per chance you're using the L4 Oxford and the maps don't show, see if your columns is turned on. For some of the maps relative to the size of the panel, they don't display. Turning off columns resolves it.

Which, by the way, they're nice maps (as are NET's).

Plus, unique to Oxford (?), clicking on the maps creates a zoom-in larger popup window for scrolling around the map. Nice.
