Need help with a collection rule

I rarely write new collection rules, so I don't remember from time-to-time how to finesse the syntax.

I'm trying to make a collection of Greek bibles and Greek reference works (dictionaries, lexici, etc.). I don't want general commentaries in it. The rule I wrote doesn't work. What do I need to do to fix it?

Give this a try:

(type:Bible AND language:Greek) OR (type:lexicon ANDNOT hebrew)

The problem with your definition is that it must match both sides of the first "AND", but no resources match both sides.

Try replacing the AND after "hebrew" with an "OR"

At the moment you are asking for resources which are both lexicons and Bibles

Alternatively "(type:lexicon, bible) AND language:greek" is simpler and - I think - gives you what you want

Wiki => http://wiki.logos.com/Example_Collections includes Grammars with rule:

subject:(Grammar,Language,Reference) AND type:(“Bible Notes”,Grammar,Encyclopedia,Monograph)

that can be used for a Grammars - Greek collection by adding one more Subject filter:

Subject:Greek Subject:(Grammar,Language) Type:("Bible Notes",Grammar,Encyclopedia,Monograph)

Wiki also has Greek Bibles with rule:

type:Bible AND Language:Greek ANDNOT subject:Manuscript

So a combined rule that includes lexicons while excluding manuscripts:

Subject:Greek Subject:(Bible,Grammar,Language) ANDNOT Subject:Manuscript

Most commentaries do not match Subject filtering; my Greek Bibles + Grammars + Language collection has 4 Bible Commentary resources, including Robertson's "Word Pictures in the Greek New Testament". Note: removing Type from rule added some Clause Visualization resources.

I'm with KJS4 on this point.

The rule type:lexicon ANDNOT hebrew will give you all lexicons (assuming Logos' typing is correct, which may miss a lexicon resource in the monographs) excluding those where "hebrew" is mention anywhere in the metadata fields, including the description. You are lucky that no one mentioned that e.g. TDNT (Kittel) will often treat the hebrew counterparts of greek words in its discussion - otherwise it would be out (not sure about BDAG here). Thus you may miss resources you intended to include. On the other hand, your collection will include lots of lexicons for non-Greek languages other than Hebrew: Latin, Syriac, Aramaic, Arabic... this subpart should definitely be formulated along the lines of type:lexicon AND subject:Greek

Note that you may still manually tweak this for metadata errors - such as the Hebrew/Aramaic lexicon of Bosman, Poosting & Potsma.
