I have an SSD in my LOGOS machine. I know I'm supposed to turn off windows indexing with an SSD...but what about LOGOS indexing? Anyone know? Is it the same thing? I suspect the answer is no, it's not an issue, but figured I'd ask if anyone knows.
I don't know anything about turning off Windows indexing on an SSD, but I do know that unless you let Logos index, you will not be able to use Logos as much more than an e-reader. So by all means let Logos index.
You are correct, the answer is no.
It is recommended to turn off indexing on SSD's because the Windows Indexing service makes almost continuously of small writes to the disk. SSD's have a limited lifespan with regard to writes and perform best on read heavy, write light systems. This is also the reason why your pagefile should also be moved to a non-SSD disk if possible.
The Logos indexing only indexes when updates or new books are applied. It is no where near as write intensive as the pagefile or Windows Indexing.
Thank you, Dan. I assumed it was like that. Richard--I knew we needed it, but wasn't sure what LOGOS would do to an SSD. I've been running one in my laptop for a year or two now with no problems...and just dropped one in my desktop that I now use primarily in my office.
Also, in Logos indexing is required in order to do searches, whereas Windows indexing service only speeds up searching for files. Searching still works in Windows without the index, it's only a bit slower, but you've got the speed advantage of the SSD working in your favor, so that shouldn't be an impediment.
In general you should turn off Windows features that an SSD makes redundant because of its sheer speed e.g. Windows Search, Superfetch, scheduled defragmentation (do not defragment an SSD).
And any apps that want to pre-load a part of themselves at system boot time, in order to make launching them completely later quicker. You don't need this with an SSD. In fact, I remove all that clutter from my Startup folder even with a normal hard disk.
