Note file size?

How can I find out how much memory a note file is taking (how large the file is becoming)?

And when is it getting so large that I may experience issues as a result? (just curious because I have seen this listed as a potential problem in several other posts)

I am not good about digging around and looking for the actual file... perhaps someone else can direct you to that. My method is to "fake" printing the note file. That should tell you how many "pages" it would take to print.

I dont have a good answer for you. Also, there are different "issues." For example: I just deleted my reading plan highlight document, which had the entire Bible marked (not with inductive marks, but just multiple highlights per page). The file would sync just fine... but highlights would take about 20-30 seconds to appear on my iPad (3rd Gen). When I was beta testing much earlier, that same file caused me sync troubles... so there have been some "success" in eliminating sync errors.

If you are on a Mac, your document files are in this folder (yes, it is still Logos4 even on Logos 5!):

~/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Documents

You can copy the above, open the Finder, click the "Go" on the menubar and then click the "Go to Folder…" near the bottom of that menu. Paste it into the box and click "Go"

The next folder down from Documents will have a unique name, open it, click on "Documents" again, then "Notes." You'll see your note files and be able to see how big (in megabytes or kilobytes) they are. My note file is 2.6 mb and is still working fine. Highlights appear in 2-5 seconds on my iPad 2.

If you are on Windows, you'll have to wait for a Windows person to come along to help.

It would appear that unless you only have one note file, you aren't getting a true measurement of any particular note file since they seem to be combined into one. The "notes.db" file on my disc is 71,441 kb. I'll assure you that I have no note file that large.

Ah, yes, you are right...I only use one note file (mainly for highlighting), so I didn't catch that. Thanks for the clarification.

Hmmmm ... I am running Logos 5 on a Mac mini and a Macbook Pro. I have several note files but don't seem to have the folder you describe.

There are two library folders on the Mac: one in the root folder and another in the home folder; did you use: ~/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Documents as I described above? If you did, then you still have to dig deeper. There's a folder with a funny looking name, then another documents folder, then finally, the notes folder.

Keep in mind what George said, the notes.db file contains all your individual note files. So the size of the note.db file is for all your notes.

I can go to ~/Library/Application Support but do not have a Logos folder of any kind. All my files seem to be OK and the notes sync between the two computers. I thought there might be a trick that keeps it hidden. I am new to Mac ... I know that on the PC there are hidden files. Does that exist on Mac?

You got me stumped.

Yes, there are hidden files and folders on the Mac, in fact, the Library folder that we're talking about is hidden on the newest OS X, Mountain Lion -- That's why I gave the instructions I did to get to it. ]

Just to make sure that you are in the right library, try doing this: Open Finder; Click on Go; with the drop down menu visible, press the Option key. You should see the Library folder appear on the menu. Then click on it and drill down through the folders: Application Support, etc.

As far as the Logos folder being hidden, I've never come across that happening.

I also have a lot of other BAK files in other folders (Visual Markup etc.) This is taking up a lot of space!

Can I delete the BAK files, or all but the most recent?

Files with a .BAK extension are backup files. Unless something untoward happens, you'll never need them. Delete away.
