LORD in ESV Titles

In my reading of the ESV I have been noticing that a number of titles LORD has a bold L with non-bold ORD. Originally I thought it was a mistake in typesetting but I have now noticed it many times. For examples see Psalm 148:1 and Malachi 2:1.

Does anyone know why it is done this way?

Use your Reverse Interlinear resource to examine the base text.

In most cases, modern versions the use the title "LORD" to translate "YHWH".

In the Hebrew Scriptures the title, "Lord" is usually translated from the Hebrew word for "Adoni"

However - regarding the Bolding of the letter "L" - it's probably a function of the font type

What is interesting to note that the entire title is Bold except ORD which is weird. Note that this in only in the titles and not in the text. Again see the two references I mentioned. Since the tiles are not in the reverse interlinear they do not come into play.

I understand how translators try to translate the Tetragrammaton using all caps but what I don't understand is why only the first letter is in bold.

I see it as an editorial convention that was carried over from the RSV by the ESV editors, and linked to the preface material that spoke to that logic.

The appearance of Bold is most likely a bow to ASCII fonts that couldn't render a Capital Capital.

I understand this. I realize that the first letter is caps and the next three are in small caps. My question still stands. Why is the first letter only in bold and not the other three letters? My question has nothing to do with caps or small caps.

I looked at the tagging of the resource text and the entire title is actually bold. (You can confirm this by copying and pasting the text to Word, which retains the formatting.)

I think the problem may be that the bold weight of small caps letters in Arial (the pericope title font) just doesn't look very bold at the default resource font size.

That's the reason Bradley. Thanks for explaining it. I think that this is a weakness of how the font is set up now because it doesn't look like it is in bold. My recommendation would be to change this in future editions.

Sorry Bruce, I thought you might be mistaken. I had copied the text to Word 2007 to see if it was bold (retaining source formatting) and it wasn't!

Dave, I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. Bradley seemed to have solved the problem from my perspective. Each title of that has LORD in it that I have tried have all shown to be bold including the two references I mentioned at the start of this thread. Can you give examples of what is not working for you? The font that Logos uses does not look bold but when I paste it into Word it comes up bold. I think this is a weakness of this font and that Logos should address this situation in the future.

This also was what I misunderstood. Looking at the pericope titles I can see the oddity of the "L" only appearing to be bold.
