Moving L4 to another Drive

I am using L4 Windows on a Mac running Fusion on a virtual machine a created a few years ago to run L3. L4 has now fill my virtual HD. XP will not allow me to expand the volume, but I can create a new one. How can I transfer L4 to that new virtual drive? AFAIK, this would be the same procedure as moving L4 to a second HD.

XP shows a 500 GB disk, but will not allow me to expand the volume. The message says that it was created in a previous version. In either case, I want to move L4 to the larger volume, but I'm unsure as to how to proceed. With other apps I could simply move the data files and direct the app to the new location, but this does not seem to be an option with L4.

This would be easy in Vista or Win 7. Unfortunately XP doesn't come with a built-in way of creating symbolic links which would be the easiest way.

I think you may be stuck with moving it by following the wiki instructions on installing to another computer;

ie back up Data and Documents directories to your new drive; uninstall the program and delete the old Logos4 directory; and then run the installer and choose to install to the bigger drive, then follow the instructions on restoring your Data and Documents to the right place so you don't need to download or index again...

How can you easily do this in Vista? Where can I find step by step directions to do this in both XP and Vista? Or can you please tell me?

I have Logos 4 loaded on my XP and Vista computers. Can I have one external hard drive swapping between the two machines running L4 as I have running L3? Where would I find "...the instructions on restoring your Data and Documents to the right place..."? Is it part of the Logos 4 installing dialogue boxes when you choose to install to another directory/drive?

Note that Logos4 installs everything in the one location, whereas L3 allowed you to have resources and user files in locations different from where the program was installed. The intent of moving data and documents is to facilitate a separate installation whilst avoiding a big download and lengthy indexing.

You will have to install twice to the hard drive, renaming the first installation, deleting the second one, and then renaming the original installation to what it was (just the Logos4 folder). No guarantees (see http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers Method 2).

Easily if you know what you're doing [:D]

Close Logos 4 and cut and paste the whole install directory to the other drive. Eg move C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Logos4 to \Logos4

Now run a command prompt with administrator privileges (in Start Menu->Accessories right click Command Prompt, Run as Administrator)

Navigate to the AppData directory: cd C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local

Then create a symbolic link, the syntax is mklink /D LinkName LinkTarget. eg mklink /D Logos4 \Logos4

If you browse to the AppData directory in Windows you'll see what looks like a shortcut to the Logos4 directory, it's actually a symbolic link which is far more useful because it means it will behave as though the folder you've moved to your other hard drive is really still right there on this one eg double click on it; as far as your explorer window knows its still on C drive...

Thanks a lot for your help and clarification.

So if I copy from my XP machine the "\Logos4" folder on my C drive to my external D drive (D:\Logos4) and followed both your instructions regarding re-installing Logos 4 on my XP machine by changing the install location to \Logos4 and setting up the symbolic link to \Logos4 in my Vista machine, both machines should be able to read the resources off my D drive after I delete the original Logos4 folder on the C drives of both machines...Is that right? But no promises, I realize.

Can I move my XP C:\...logos4 folder to my external \ drive instead of moving my Vista C:\...logos4? I'm missing one file on my Vista machine and I don't feel like hunting for just one file.

Now let me get this straight:

Steps:

1) On my XP machine, once I move my C:\...logos4 folder which has my indexed resources to my external \logos4.

2) I should uninstall Logos 4 and then re-install Logos 4

3) When it asks about custom install, I choose \.

5) When it installs, a logos4 shell folder with no resources will be created by the re-install.

6) This shell folder is the folder I should delete.

7) I rename the \logos4 containing the moved indexed resources to the name of the shell folder created that is now deleted.

Question:

1) To be on the safe side, I should name the moved resources to a completely different so as not to be confused?

2) Do I need to delete the original C:\Logos4 with the indexed resources prior to uninstalling?

3) What exactly will be installed on the \ drive? Is there a series of paths and files to navigate through to get to the area where I would paste/rename the folder containing the indexed files?

4) After doing this, will both my machines, the XP and Vista be able to read off the same logos4 file? Or do I have to save each individual machines' files separately onto their own external drives?

5) When there are resource updates and new purchases will it automatically know to save to my external drive and index it there?

Below is a complete list of steps to perform.

If you have any doubts about this procedure then I recommend you do not proceed, especially as there is no guarantee that it will work for both XP and Vista, and you then have to re-install for one or both systems.

1) On my XP machine, COPY my C:\...logos4 folder which has my indexed resources to external \logos4.

1a. Rename \logos4 to \XPlogos4 so it does not get overwritten when you re-install

1b. go OFF-LINE (disable Network Connection or remove network cable) to avoid downloads when you install

2) uninstall Logos 4 completely (ie. delete any folders left at C:\...logos4), and then re-install Logos 4

3) When it asks about custom install, I choose \logos4

5) When it installs, a logos4 shell folder with no resources will be created by the re-install.

5a. If L4 starts up then close it. If the indexer starts, kill it in Task Manager

6) This shell folder \logos4 is the folder I should delete.

7) rename \XPlogos4 containing the moved indexed resources to \logos4

8. Link the Vista installation to \logos4 as described earlier

Hey guys,

In theory, renaming the folders, like Dave explained, so you can install to the same drive/directory on two computers, should work, but I caution you, the Logos Support staff does not support this type of installation.

Installing any software to an external drive is dangerous. External drives, by nature, do not hold on to their drive letter. If that drive letter ever changes, Logos 4 and any other program installed to that drive, will not function.

Further, Logos 4 is a very large application with a very large index file. Some external drive will not support large files. The drive will need to be formatted as NTFS. FAT32 does not allow for the index to grow beyond a certain point.

You're also going to run in to a data bottle-neck by running the entire application through your USB 2.0 interface, not to mention the potential for significant problems if the core application is updated on one computer and not the other. You may find yourself forced to dance around, renaming folders and reinstalling, every time a major update is released.

Instead of running Logos 4 and its resources entirely from within my Parallels Windows (Vista) partition—which had begun to take up half my allotted 32 GB of HD space—I tried Jon's method above and successfully got all my files over into a folder in my Mac partition. Now, however, Logos won't run even though everything else in Jon's instructions worked and I know I have a dedicated drive letter (Z:).

I suspect Mike Bryant may be right and my lack of NTFS (since the Logos files are in OS X) is messing me up.

Any tips, anyone?

The Mac OS must support remote symbolic links for this to work, and that doesn't seem to be the case (or the Parallels environment does not support it). Just give Parallels more space as you are prepared to use Mac storage!

Correct, Mark. I'm afraid that Parallels is not able to run Logos4 from the Mac partition. As suggested though, if you are willing to use your Mac partition, then it wouldn't be much different to expand your Parallels space, since you'd be giving it up in that Mac parittion anyhow.

I've got more experience with Fusion, but I think I heard that Parallels will let you expand an existing hard drive now. You'll probably want to look in to that. Someone in the Mac forums may be able to give you some insight there.

I had this problem as well. I had an XP Fusion partition that ran out of room. I could expand the size of the Virtual Drive, but not the XP partition inside Windows. Rather than start over as you are considering I used a partition manager. This was some time ago, so I am going off of memory (poor). I have since moved to a Windows 7 Parallels partition, so I don't have it any more. But I think I installed and used the following and it worked for me. Sure was easy if I remember correctly. You might check into it.

I have the opposite issue. I run Windows 7 and installed Logos 4 onto a partition , but would now like to move it back to C: (more room there). Can I just move it to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Logos4, or do I need to:

The method Dave has suggested would probably be the preferred method. You'll want to be aware that the index will need to be rebuilt to recognize the new location.

The point of Method 2 is that an index rebuild isn't necessary (why do you make this point?)
