NAC Revelation by Paige Patterson

I note that the NAC Revelation by Paige Patterson is scheduled to ship on January 18. I look forward to receiving it. I understand that Paige Patterson is Dispensational, but will deal scholarly with all views. This may be the most scholarly commentary on Revelation from a Dispensational perspective to be published. Are there any other major scholarly commentary sets that approach Revelation from a Dispensational point of view? I am not aware of any.

I am not Dispensational myself, but would welcome one good commentary from that perspective. I am talking about something that deals openly and honestly with the Greek text and critical issues. Hope this is it. I have appreciated a number of the NAC volumes.

I have pre-pub this commentary, I have found the NAC very good for understanding the scripture and then being able to communicate it to others.

I did a little research on Paige Patterson and found a discussion on eschatology he had, in which he confessed being dissatisfied when he was labeled a dispensationalist. Not that he had another substitute term, but he wanted to distance himself from some of the dispensational weirdness out there. He did deal honestly, and carefully with the post-mil and amil positions, and that was enough for me to want to add this commentary to my collection.

I can't say I would agree with some of his other positions (in particular his complementarianism), but I haven't researched him on those.

Often you learn more reading somebody who has a different theological viewpoint that you, because you have to articulate and understand why you hold your perspective over theirs.

Understand that, and I am a Dispensationalist [8-|]. Remembering reading a book by Ryrie in which he spoke about Liberals taking over conservative labels. He concluded they would never take over Fundamentalist. He was correct that Liberals would not use this label for themselves, but they have used it to label practically every crazy theology/radical political view in existence. Labels become dangerous in that they tend to trap a person in boxes with some they would not want to be associated with.

That being said, I look forward to this commentary.

I'll be surprised if he does that. Dr. Patterson has spoken critically (in my opinion, accusingly) of Calvinism in a way that looks like he doesn't see Calvinists as within the fold of orthodoxy. I know he's denied that characterization on other occasions, but he's said what he's said. He's also been active in some SBC attacks on Calvinists recently.

Given that, I'll be surprised if he deals with Calvinistic non-dispy views in a scholarly way. But maybe he'll surprise me. Dr. Patterson's contributions to returning the SBC from a tact toward mainline liberalism are remarkable and can never be overstated. I wish he had a better grasp of the Calvinistic roots of the SBC now.

I've got Beale and Osborne on Revelation, so I don't think I'll be buying Patterson. But as was stated by others, I too have appreciated the NAC volumes so maybe I'll change my mind.

For anyone interested and near the Houston, TX area, Patterson will be giving a talk at the Lanier Theological Library later this month about his commentary.

There's usually a question and answer session afterward, as well as a reception where you can talk with Patterson.

Sometime after the lecture a video of it is usually put online, if anyone wants to watch it and can't make it to Houston.
