My Logos software is on my old computer, purchased in 2004 (ancient by computer standards), and we are upgrading to a new computer. I don't want to lose nine years of updates and input. I'm not sure if the current software on the discs that I have will actually run on the newer operating systems (Windows 8).

What is the best way for me to get my Logos on the new computer?

Welcome to the forums Charles.

There are multiple ways to do this. The "official" way is to download the engine from Logos and let Logos download everything new (it will download all your personal documents - but not personal books). The easiest way to do that is to go to your orders page and scroll down your order history to find your Logos4/Logos5 purchase and follow the directions.

The other way is to use one of the methods found in the wiki here: http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers (probably Method 2). This requires a backup of your Logos stuff before the transfer to a new computer. This can be several gigabytes (my Logos backup is over 18GB), so you may benefit from an external hard drive (which is a good idea anyway, IMHO, for backing up all your personal files on a regular basis). Sometimes a new computer will come with an option for a cable and software to transfer files from one computer to another. This may or may not work for you - I don't know why not, but I don't know of anyone who has actually done it this way.

In any case the program should be installed from the most recent version on the Logos web site (see your order history), and the rest installed as the wiki describes, or by letting Logos do all the work for you.

It sounds like you have Libronix3? If so, your best bet is to make sure you syncronize it with Logos, and then upgrade to Logos4 (free at the moment) or Logos5 (L5 engine free in a few weeks; currently offered with various purchasable packages).

Some factors that may 'color' your decision:

- Libronix sometimes runs ok on Windows8 and sometimes not. Current guesswork is that it's most likely to run ok if it's a clean install of Windows8

- Logos4/5 imports in your notes as long as they're not too complicated. There's a process provided. But if you have valuable notes, you'll need to make a decision.

- Logos4/5 also doesn't read the older personal books. So if you have any, the literal text has to be put in a Word docx for re-compiling into Logos4/5.

- If you want to simply move Libronix onto your Windows8 and try it out, the simplest way is to (1) Backup your licenses (2) Backup your user data (in My Documents), and (3) Backup your books (in c:\Program Files\Libronix DLS\Resources. Then install a new Libronix3g (copy downloadable) and restore your data (restore licenses, and copy over the backups).

One option may be converting physical computer into a virtual machine so can continue to use your existing Logos plus install Logos 5 on new computer. Oracle's VirtualBox runs on Windows and OS X so have an optional choice for new computer.

Personally can use Libronix 3.0g and Logos 5 in one user on Windows 7.
