Logos 5

I find it hard to believe that a lot of people like myself who have the basic logos 4 packages don't flinch every time you get something in your e-mail from Logos ...These people, God bless them for all that they have put together, never stop coming up with ideas to cost you more......I guess they think money grows on trees..........200 dollars for this, 300 for that, 600 for this.. Common folks, Logos is nice but it isn't a necessity to study the Bible.......I have a library full of good old fashioned BOOKS...........And to boot, this system is not easy to learn, at least it hasn't been for me.......If I had spent the hours reading the Bible that I have trying to figure out how to study the Bible with Logos, I probably could have read through the Bible at least once.....And now its Logos 5...Hey its just 30 bucks or 50 bucks a month for a year or so, for this or that upgrade.....It never ends.....I guess next year we'll see Logos 6 or 5.2 or something...I’m in my 60's now and Logos reminds me a lot of the game Kodak played with cameras,for decades.....Every year there was something new camera to buy, some new gadget you had to have.....I think at this point if Logos would give me money back they could have Logos 4 back........Its not that it isn’t something neat to have, but its not necessary and for the average guy its a bit much on the budget. Our minister loves it, but I guess so, the church paid for the works.....Unfortunately most of us don’t have that option or the cash to max out on Logos editions.........

I'm building a house right now, and if you were to add a 0 to the end of those numbers, you'd get an idea of what it costs to do those "little" unforeseen things that come up. - I know, totally off topic; but I can relate.

Logos is a tool. I know mechanics with more in tools than I have in books, but I don't tell them they could do most of what they need with a $1 screw driver and a crescent wrench. Sort of a stretch for an analogy, but you get the idea.

Maybe you don't need Logos. I suppose many people really don't. There are even some free programs out there that are pretty good.

Speaking only personally, I have found Logos to be invaluable to me as I prepare sermons and Bible studies each week. I could do a 'shade-tree-mechanic' job on those and people might be okay with it. But there is a time for depth too. Digging deep into God's Word, for most of us, requires more than prayer and a good translation - though both are absolutely necessary! It's also helpful to look at the original languages, to understand the culture in which and for which something was written, to hear how others have approached a certain passage, etc. Logos excels at helping me do those things. I don't have a theological library to go to, since I pastor a rural church in a small community. Logos has helped me build my own theological library, which I use almost every day.

Keep in mind, I don't have a book budget. Nobody bought Logos for me - it came out of my saving and scraping and doing without other things. Unlike you, I feel I have more than I bargained for - in a good way!

Since you have a base package with Logos4, you need feel no compulsion to upgrade anything you don't want to. The free Logos5 engine should be out soon, and you can upgrade to that without paying a dime, or losing anything you already have. Of course, Logos wants to sell you stuff. That's how they fund development of their program. But it's perfectly fine to ignore them, if you want, or follow the instructions to no longer receive emails from them.

If you are annoyed by the emails, unsubscribe. If you don't want to use logos anymore, I know there are people that have sold their library. There is however a small license transfer fee.

As Richard said there are many free programs out there that do a pretty good job for the average bible student. Logos is designed for people who want to go beyond the average bible study. It can also do the average bible study..

No one is making you upgrade, you can use the library you currently own as long as you desire.

In short logos is a business that desires to grow, and improve. They do so by offering us more books, and new tools that make our study more efficient. They are not a non profit company, it cost money to even offer us those things. Someone(s) has to be paid to come up with an ideas of new tools. Someone(s) also has to be paid to make deals with publishers to even offer us books. Not to mention all the investment logos inputs to bring these things into fruition.

On a personal note, I stand behind their software, it has helped me tremendously in my studies.Not all people share my sentiment, this I understand. Best wishes to you in your studies Robert, I hope to see you in the forums in the future. Blessings in Christ.

Personally have an email folder for Logos; typically glance at them. Unsubscribing from Logos email promotions is an option plus can customize Logos Home Page to not show Logos marketing.

Bigger purchases have lower price per resource. Thankful for Logos payment plan, which does not charge interest on outstanding balance, but does pass along payment processing fees.

I have a library full of good old fashioned BOOKS

Appreciate shelves of physical books, but find Logos is much faster for finding relevant pages in various resources.

My favorite Logos feature is visual filter highlighting that combines hundreds of search results so can "see" range of Greek verbal expression in Greek and English resources:

Thankful for a 1901 American Standard Version personal book bible without visible chapter and verse numbers for reading. The numbers were not part of the original Biblical writings. In the New Testament, Luke 6:37 has three Greek sentences while Luke 6:28-29 is one Greek sentence. By the way, Luke 6:38 and 6:39 also have three Greek sentences. Personally puzzled by chapter and verse number placement in a number of places, including Philippians 4:6
