Template optimization

Hey, maybe there was a tutorial and I missed or something...

I designed a template that I want to use in all of my studies.. But everytime I go to the passage guide it reverts to the default and I have to adjust it... Not only that but I added sections from my collection such as theology and apologetics, but they do not automatically show up when going through the passage guide.

Basically each time I do a study I have to set my template and add those collection sets to my passage guide... Is there a way to have my workspace saved like in version 3 so it is always set up for how I study ?

I figured there was but I missed the tutorial somehow...

I believe your guide must be named "My Passage Guide" or "My Exegetical Guide." L4 is supposed to see that and accommodate.

That should work.

Let me be clear: "My Passage Guide" should replace the standard passage guide when working from the home page. If you select "Passage Guide" from the tools menu, I believe all you'll get is the standard passage guide. However, you can select your passage guide directly instead, I believe from the files menu.

Perfect.... You are right...

I deleted all of my guide templates and started over... I named it my passage guide and it worked...

How do I change my default layout.. I seem to have to change it every time I do a study also. I have a layout made but it reverts to the default with my new "my passage guide"...

We are able to change our layout... Set up the window panes in our passage guide they way we want. I have saved a template of the layout I would like, but it does not go to that layout by default. The window pane layout I set up has 2 small windows on the right one big window in the middle and one long skinny window on the left. When I go to my new "my passage guide" it sets it up with 5 windows one long on the left side and four equal in the middle and the right. I would like for it to go to the layout I created by default.

Also, when I saved my layout, my passage guide was saved with my extra collections theology and apologetics. So it would seem like I dont even need to design a guide template, but just design layout template with the passage guide the way I like it. It will save it kinda like designing a guide template but having the extra capability to design your panes along with your guide.

Give it a shot, you will see what I mean.. Go to your passage guide and change a few things in there so you know it is different then what you originally had. Then change your window panes also. Save the layout and name it...

If you go your homepage and load the layout you saved and named it will show up with your custom passage guide and custom window panes...

My question is, is there a way that layout I saved can be loaded up by default from the homepage when going to the passage guide... Instead of going to the right hand corner of the homepage then loading it up, then typing in the passage ?

I found a work around... On the homepage, if I set it up so that my homepage does not load up on start up, it will revert to the way I had my layout set up with my custom passage guide and my window panes perfect...

You are asking about a preferred layout, rather than a custom guide. That's an entirely different thing (confusion of terms). A "Passage Guide" is technically a 'report' selected from the "Guides" menu of L4.

I don't know of a way to save a layout, without saving all the resources opened to the places those resources were opened to when the layout was saved. That is to say, I don't know of a way to save a layout template.

As far as I know, there's no way to get the home page "Go" button to load anything but the default layout either. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, since I never use it.

I think i can help ya here:

I opened L4 and reset to have the home page at start up/ close-restart / cleared the history / close-restart / opens now to home page - went to 'make a new guide template' and created one with only the preferred for the ' Passage Guide' also opend tabs and set some library books randomly. Clicked the 'pencil' and NAMED it 'Passage Guide' ----closed all the tabs and went to guides icon, and clicked the newly created """""Passage Guide"""" template. everything loaded as i had just set it, closed them all again and cleard the 'History' and RESET the HOME PAGE so that it would not open at startup and CLEARD the HISTORY again and closed L4.

When I opened L4 it went to a blank the same as L3 would do when set to "Open to Blank desktop"....Now here is where i open the newly created """""""Passage Guide"""" -----cleard the "HISTORY" and closed L4. I waited about five minutes and started L4 and it opend to the personally created Passage Guide and the Tabs/windows/books that i randomly set.

Took alittle creativity but i hope this is what you are/were looking for...

Unless I am missing somethign, there is a simpler solution. Here are the steps:

Create your passage guide--you did this already. Check.
open it.
open any other resources and size/place the panes the way you want them when you work out of your passage guide.
Then click on "layout."
On the top of the right column of snapshots is one with the heading "now."
Click on the pencil. That allows you to name that layout any way you want. One idea: "sermon prep"
Now your preferred passage guide is integrated (open) with your preferred layout. Anytime you want to do your study with the passage guide, open the layout called "sermon prep" and it will open.
CRITICAL: if you want your layout to open up the way it looks when you are done studying for the day you must resave the layout following the steps 4-6. You must spell the layout name the same exact way as you did before, otherwise you will create another layout. not a huge deal, but not what you want. So, you if you save the layout the 2nd time by typing "Sermon Prep" or sermon preparation, Logos will save that one in addition to your "sermon prep" one.
They are working on a way to make saving the layouts easier (like a "save" button or something, but that is not out yet.

the only problem i have here is that you MUST save the Layout,,,,but with the method that was formulated the created Passage Guide will always always open to where you left off when you close L4- this means no saving a layout unless you want to seperate it from the PG you created. Also, currently there is no way to overwrite a saved layout as you have descrirbed you must save your current viewing as a layout w/ a different name provided of course you changed it and wish to save it.

In L3 you could create 'workspaces' that would give an open starting point, consider that 'make a new guide template' in the same manner. Then when you get to the point to where you want to save it you can then create the Layout with that particular passage/study NAME.

The only hitch is that when you close L4 then reopen it will open to the saved layout that you just created and close with, The only way i have found to open L4 to a closed desktop is to close everything then close L4 then when i open later i can either chose a saved layout or start fresh with a PG or what ever 'workspace' i copied from L3.

there is another workaround: Use your clean created template as the default / should you have a text or passage that you want to study but do not want to leave a history in your default template, then save it as the layout with that text heading and go from there, should you then not want to save it you can click on your 'clean' template and delete the saved layout.....not changing the clean template and opening L4 from a fresh perspective.

Everyone will develop what is useful for them, myself, i like to start fresh, meaning i have created some templates that are clean and have a special that has NO tabs/windows/books that is i close L4 with, this way it always opens to a blank screen.
