How do I categorize or label resources?

Hello,

I am in a non-denominational ministry setting, so when I upgraded to v5, I added a Verbum package to my library to augment information. Is there a way to separate or partition these resources in my library? Or, is there a way to label these resources as Verbum, so that as I search I can differentiate between them and the rest of my library? Clearly I can recognize the "Summa Contra Gentiles" as a Verbum resource, however the "Introduction to Christianity" by Cardinal Ratzinger could easily be confused with the other non-Verbum resources. Can you do this in "My Tags" when you pull up the library, or is there an easier way? The Verbum resources are a 10th of my library, so anything to help identify these would be great.

I don't have the Verbum resources so can't say if there are any inbuilt identifiers / labels which would help here. Those with Verbum packages will be able to advise on that

Yes, I would suggest the best thing to do is to tag them with a label which will be meaningful to you - such as "Verbum". This uses "My Tags" as you reference in your note. For details on tagging - if you aren't familiar with it - please see http://wiki.logos.com/Tagging

Then you are able to use the tag as a filter in the library to just show the resources you have tagged as shown below

You can use the same tagging information in searches to limit searches to those resources.

To add to what Graham already said, once you've tagged all your Verbum resources as such, not only can you limit searches to just those resources (by selecting mytag:Verbum from the "Search In" dropdown in the Search tab, you can also do a search that excludes your Verbum resources if you want to just search the rest of your library, which it sounds like you might be wanting to do. You'd create a Collection called something like "NOT Verbum" and define it using the rule

rating:>0 ANDNOT mytag:Verbum

Note that "ANDNOT" has to be in all upper case and there should not be a space after either of the colons. The "rating:>0" selects everything in your library (it's the quickest way to do that), and the ANDNOT clause excludes those resources that match mytag:Verbum.

Then you'd search in this collection.

One option for tagging is sorting Library by Last Updated date so can group resources added by Verbum purchase together: easy to highlight many resources then add a tag.

Perhaps you've noticed the "View" button in your library. There are "helps" there to assist us in our tagging.

While this will technically work, I'd be reluctant to do so.

The underlying assumption is "my non-Verbum resources reflect sound doctrine while all in Verbum is RCC-contaminated stuff" which is wrong on both counts. The non-Verbum base packages plus the other titles one may have required are full of the most colorful viewpoints, including RCC. And the Verbum packages contain lots of stuff that is not RCC, but just plain bible study material, or even decidedly non-RCC material, that overlaps a lot with other packages (such as the ESV and KJV bible, Keil-Delitzsch Commentary on the OT or even Calvin's Institutes). A look at http://www.logos.com/catholic#compare may help to clarify.

This was not my purpose when I asked about how to categorize my library, and I would think that Rosie's response was in answering my question and not insinuating that one part of my library was contaminated or not. My own purpose is to help identify resource point of views. I will use this to help identify not only books in the Catholic tradition, but books in a Calvinist tradition, Jewish/Messianic POV, and continuing into other groups. When you buy large packages of books (Gold, Platinum, etc.) you get a mixed bag of POV's. It is helpful for me to identify resource POV's so that I can search specific topics, theologies, dogma's, etc. in that tradition. When your dealing with people with various levels of theological knowledge and understanding from various religious traditions, it is much easier to narrow a search to applicable traditions. No one wants to talk about the outline of their theological beliefs when your using Joe Snuffy's book on "Whats Wrong With Their Belief's and How Show Them" to better understand what their talking about. Each tradition has its good and bad points, and each (for the most part) has a purpose in the Kingdom. When you deal with their issues and let them grow in their relationship with our Father God, then that person and the Holy Spirit can decide if their current church and/or church tradition are where they need to be.

I'm fully with you and I'd like to be able to identify resource POVs in my library as well. I justed wanted to make sure that everybody understands that the fact that a resource is part of a Verbum base package may not be an indicator of Catholic POV - as we can see from Calvin's Institutes. Your words of the "mixed bag of POV's" simply is true for Verbum as well.

Each tradition has its good and bad points, and each (for the most part) has a purpose in the Kingdom.

Full ack! However, my post was not directly related to the tradition associated with Verbum (after all, I'm in the evangelical tradition, not in the RCC), but about the often unintentional consequences of filtering resources. I can easily understand that someones wants to run a search against "all but RCC-tagged resources" (or all but baptist, all but reformed, ...) but I can't imagine a meaningful search against "all but Verbum".

Glad we're in agreement. For the record, I didnt put all the Verbum books in the Verbum group, just those in the Catholic POV. And these resources are still in my library and can be pulled up with everyone else. As you pointed out, many resources in the Verbum package are universal, and least we forget that prior to 1517, we all were Catholic.

That feature has been in Logos since 2009. I'm so sorry you didn't know about it.
