Essential iPad 4 settings for Logos 4 to Function (Download)

I've been attempting to download resources onto a newly acquired iPad 4 (Wi-Fi), so I'm a newbie with regard to iPads.

There didn't seem to be any problem downloading until I changed some of the iPad settings and now nothing appears to want to download.

The iPad is mainly for more mobility in the home, for e-book reading/studying, and so I followed advice to 'switch off" features that shorten battery life and won't really be used - e.g notifications, mail, messages, facetime etc. etc.

I'm still able to download resources for my Wordsearch Library on iPad, so it's my guess that I've switched off something that Logos specifically needs to operate (and that Wordsearch obviously doesn't need).

Are there any specific, ESSENTIAL settings that need to be ON in the iPad for Logos 4 to work (download)?

Can anyone please assist?

I haven't seen anything like this reported before so don't have any great insight here

Some questions:

Can you still see resources in your library and you are just having a problem when trying to download or have you lost all visibility to your library?
What happens when you try and download a resource? Do you get an error message, does it hang or something else?
Can you use some functions in the app which require access to Logos servers - such as running a Passage Guide or Text Comparison?

Hello Rob,

I'm sorry for the trouble you're experiencing. Generally speaking, if 1 app misbehaves while others do not, it isn't a bad idea to simply reinstall the 1 app. Logos really isn't any different. I couldn't say what might have contributed to this issue, but perhaps something has corrupted the app or its settings. Reinstalling the app will likely clear this up.

If that doesn't work, please let us know.

Yep. You must have internet (either by wifi or cellular). None of the other settings you mentioned have any bearing on the Logos app. Once you have downloaded the resources, they will be visible and useable once offline. Did you turn on "Airplane" mode by chance?

EDIT - I reread your post after reading Mike's reply. Reinstalling the app is always an option to try…

Can you explain more about what you mean by the resources not downloading? How are you trying to download (i.e. what steps are you using)? What resources are you trying to download? One at a time, or multiple? What internet connection are you using?

Hi Graham,

My personal guess is that one of the iPad features that I switched off is preventing Logos from connecting with the Logos server - but that's just my ignorant guess!

On the Homepage two small circles (Checking for update & Downloading News) go round & round endlessly without anything happening.

If I tap on a resource that I've NOT yet downloaded, eventually I get the message "Error loading book. Couldn't load specified book"

Tapping on Passage guide gives me "Sorry there was an error processing your request" - after usual circle search.

However, I've already downloaded over 1GB of resources (before I messed with the settings) and can access them - move around - do a search - move to contents etc. However, when I tap a Scripture ref, I also get the continuous circle searching for the source (Before I got the Bible verse). Initially I loaded certain books individually, and later discovered the "download all" and used that. For the first time after messing around with the iPad settings I got a message, when opening Logos, that a few of the books had not downloaded properly and did I want to try again - doesn't connect and nothing downloads. Something seems to be blocking contact with the Logos server, I think. I'm using a secure home Wi-Fi connection. Whatever settings I changed also won't allow me to surf the net via Safari, but as I said, I've just been downloading more stuff through Wordsearch with no trouble so I guess I can still connect with the Internet, even if not through Logos or Safari.

I see there's a suggestion that I re-install the app, but if that means I've got to download a GB of resources all over again, I'd rather try any other suggestion first. It seemed to take forever - I'm in South Africa and we like to think we're at least in a Third World country, but that's probably rather wishful thinking - our tech stuff is way backward. (Apple Premium suppliers couldn't even supply a 4th generation iPad - no stock - I had to hunt like mad to trace one in Cape Town).

I hope the info above might give someone a clue as to what the problem might be?

Whatever settings I changed also won't allow me to surf the net via Safari, but as I said, I've just been downloading more stuff through Wordsearch with no trouble so I guess I can still connect with the Internet, even if not through Logos or Safari.

How is your wifi router set up?

Have you changed anything there which could be blocking certain types of access?

EDIT: And from what you have described I wouldn't look at reinstalling the app yet. I doubt it would fix the problem and - as you say - would involve quite a bit of work.

I'm not quite sure how to answer your first question re setup of wifi router. All I can say is that it gets switched off every night and switched on again the next morning, so there shouldn't be a problem with syncing/up-dating etc. I've not changed any settings on the router

When I first logged into Logos via iPad I had to sign in with my password which is a prog-generated pw that is almost impossible to type (I always use cut & paste). Anticipating that I would need to log in every time I switched on my iPad & being new to that scene (not knowing if can/how to cut & paste in iPad) I changed my pw to something that is easy to type. I later changed back to the old pw as I thought maybe my iPad and PC might not be synced with the Logos server i.e. my iPad has wrong pw and therefore cannot connect to the server. This pw 'undo" has not sorted out my problem though.

I realised that NIV was my default Bible on my PC and I had only managed to download the ESV on my iPad. When I changed this setting to ESV the Bible refs now pop-up in the books I've downloaded. I no longer get the circle going round forever searching as in the past.

This makes me suspect that my current problem is an Internet/Logos server "accessibility settings" problem rather than a corrupt app. (I may be completely wrong of course).

I've completed downloading my Wordsearch resources without a hitch - obviously via internet access, but I still cannot do any surfing/searching via Safari browser. The Vyrso app also can't link to the Logos server.

Do you perhaps have any further thoughts on what my iPad settings should be to link to Logos server again ?

This may have something to do with the problem - there have been issues in the past where password changes haven't been correctly propagated across all systems.

However, I am interested to know how you changed your passwords in the app - to the best of my knowledge the only way to do this is via reinstalling the app.

Fundamentally this sounds like a network-level problem and the fact that Safari can't access the Internet suggests that there are certain applications / ports being blocked.

This is why I was asking questions about your router environment earlier - do you know of any firewalls in your network environment and is it possible that the settings on those have been changed?

Earlier you said that you had downloaded about 1GB of resources. Was this through the same network that you are trying to use now?

Sorry to keep on about the network but I don't know of anything on the iPad which would cause this!

One other thought

Do you have access to an Internet cafe anywhere - or somewhere with a public Wi-Fi service.

It would be interesting to see if these problems persist in that environment. It would, at least, eliminate the network as an issue.

Thanks for sticking with me, I appreciate your imput.

When I first
logged in via my iPad I typed in my original complex password. Later I went
into my Logos account via my PC and changed to a simpler password. When I
encountered the current problem, I accessed my account again and replaced the
new password with my original password. I assumed the Logos server would sync
the password on both devices.

The 1GB of
resources that I downloaded were through
my current network.

I don't
know whether it has a bearing on the problem, but I had been syncing certain
apps between my iPad and PC via iTunes, using the cable provided. I might well
have done my downloading of Logos resources on the iPad while the cable was
still connected to my PC (I can't remember, but I'm almost sure I did).
Obviously my PC has the standard MS Windows 7 firewall. Both devices would also
have been simultaneously linked to the wifi network. Could this have mangled the works?
