Can't find what I need.....most of the time

Hey everyone. My name is Cole, I'm a worship pastor is SW Florida. And despite being pretty adaptable with technology and attending camp logos last year, I am staying pretty frustrated with Logos. It feels like it does everthing that is complicated, but simple stuff, like finding a resource on the religious climate during first century rome, is impossible. I've been trying for almost an hour on that specific example and can't find anything. Could anyone offer a newbie some help here? Is my library just terrible? Am I searching wrong?

Hi Cole,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're having. I usually deal with issues of a more technical nature, so I can't guarantee this is the best method to get your results, but I had some luck with the following Boolean search:

"Rome" AND "first century" OR "Rome" AND "1st century"

I found a lot of results in the Yale Anchor Bible Dictionary, especially, but there were results in other resources throughout my library. I'm sure you could modify this search to find more information by adding additional possible spellings or dates.

You might also find a lot of helpful information by using the Universal Timeline feature in Logos 5.

Of course, some of our power-users and forum MVPs here, may have some better ideas on gathering this information too, but I hope this is at least somewhat helpful.

Hi Cole, welcome to the Logos forums!

What package do you have? The comparison chart on http://www.logos.com/comparison groups resources into categories, and the ones in the "Bible History and Culture" section are likely to be where you'll find what you're looking for. For example, you likely have The New Manners and Customs of the Bible, unless you only have the Starter package. It is organized by book of the Bible, but you could do a search within it for "religion" like this:

Another search that might help you find relevant hits in your library would be

("greco-roman","graeco-roman") NEAR religion

If your library doesn't have anything helpful and you're really wanting to do some in-depth reading in this subject area, you might consider buying one of the following books:

The New Testament Milieu -- it has a whole chapter on Religious Life with sub-sections: The old national religions (Greece, Rome); Religious syncretism and the mystery religions (Cult of Isis, Cult of Cybele, Cult of Mithras); Saviour figures; Divination; Astrology; Magic; The Hero Cult; The Cult of the Dead; Gnosticism; The Emperor Cult; and The Roman state’s attitude to Jewish and Christian religious observances.

Look in the About Box: to bring it up, click the Question mark icon in the upper right of Logos (to drop down the Help menu), and choose About Logos Bible Software. Your base package will be listed next to your name after "Licensed to: "

OK, found it. I have the bible study library base package.

I really want to use and like Logos, but I found all the info I wanted in about 15sec in a google search. lol. What am I missing?
